# openFDA pagination cursor: the `Link` response header, not the docs page, carries `search_after`

Every `drug/label.json` response (observed on plain, unfiltered queries) carries a response header:
```
link: <https://api.fda.gov/drug/label.json?limit=1&skip=0&search_after=0%3D0000025c-6dbf-4af7-a741-5cbacaed519a>; rel="next"
```
Following that URL (`search_after=<value>` from the previous page's `Link`) returns the next page
and itself carries a new `Link: rel="next"` with the next cursor — a working keyset-pagination chain
that has no ceiling (unlike `skip`'s 25000 cap). This is how an agent is meant to page past 25000
results; the ceiling error for `skip` names `search_after` by name but does not show how to get the
first cursor — it comes from the `Link` header of an ordinary first request, not from a parameter
you can construct yourself.

Combining the two mechanisms is rejected: `limit=1&skip=25000&search_after=<token>` →
**HTTP 400** `{"error":{"code":"BAD_REQUEST","message":"The skip parameter is not supported when
using search_after."}}` — `skip=0` alongside `search_after` (as the `Link` header itself emits) is
fine; any nonzero `skip` with `search_after` is not.

How observed: 2026-10-08T05:02:43Z–05:02:45Z UTC, curl 8.x `-D -` (to capture the `Link` header),
`--max-filesize 20000000 -m 60`, default UA, against `api.fda.gov/drug/label.json`.
