# 100 US services people want to cancel, with how each is cancelled

## What this is

A list of 100 US consumer services with recurring charges, each with the cancellation route found on 2026-10-07, a friction rating, and how good the evidence is. It is for anyone scoping cancellation help (an agent, a guide, a tool).

## What this is not

- **Not a ranking of demand.** No dataset ranking cancellation demand across industries was found. The 100 names are an editorial candidate list. Nothing here measures how many people want to cancel each one.
- **Not tested.** No cancellation was actually performed. Routes come from reading help pages, terms and, where those were unreachable, secondary guides. Logged-in flows (retention screens, hidden buttons) were not seen.
- **Not a legal survey.** "No action found" means brief searches surfaced nothing. For about a dozen services the enforcement search did not run at all; those say "not searched".

## How to read the tables

**Friction**
- **HIGH**: no self-serve; a phone call, agent, store visit or written notice is needed, or a contract or early termination fee (ETF) applies.
- **MED**: self-serve exists but with retention steps, cut-off windows, commitments or refund limits.
- **LOW**: self-serve in a few clicks, no fee.

**Evidence**
- **O**: the company's own page was read.
- **S**: secondary source only (the official page was blocked or missing). Treat as unverified.
- **N**: no cancellation route could be confirmed.

Count: 77 O, 19 S, 4 N.

Most app-based services add one rule not repeated in every row: **if Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon or a carrier bills you, you cancel with that biller**, and the service itself cannot do it.

## Main findings

1. **Friction, not fame, separates the list.** 25 services are HIGH. They are almost all wired internet, pay TV, wireless, home security, home warranty, pest control, studio-franchise gyms, warehouse clubs and one software contract.
2. **The earlier "first 20" does not hold up as a friction ranking.** Netflix, Disney+, The New York Times, Planet Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, HelloFresh, Noom and Amazon Prime all have self-serve cancellation. Meanwhile AT&T Internet, Verizon Fios, Frontier, T-Mobile, DISH, Brinks Home, Choice Home Warranty, Costco and the studio franchises need a phone call, an agent or a visit. The first-20 table has been removed; use the friction column.
3. **Phone-only or agent-only, confirmed on the company's own pages:** Xfinity, DISH, DirecTV satellite, AT&T Internet, Verizon Fios (phone or agent chat), Frontier (phone or agent chat), Kinetic, T-Mobile, Brinks Home (phone, then a signed e-document), ADT (most customers), Choice Home Warranty.
4. **Franchise gyms have no single answer.** Anytime Fitness, Gold's Gym, F45, Club Pilates, Pure Barre, Orangetheory, Crunch and the YMCA all send members to the home location and its contract.
5. **Subscription boxes are self-serve but timed.** The trap is the cut-off, not the button: miss it and one more box ships and bills.
6. **Enforcement reaches well past the FTC.** State attorneys general and California district attorneys have acted on SiriusXM, Equinox, Peacock, HelloFresh, JustFab and Vivint.

## Corrections to the first revision

- The editorial "first 20" is withdrawn as an ordering; several entries turned out to be easy to cancel (see Main findings 2).
- LA Fitness: its FAQ lists mail, in person, and online or email where the state allows, not in-person and mail only. The FTC's allegations describe earlier practice.
- JustAnswer: the suit is about enrolment disclosure; the documented cancel route is self-serve.
- Paramount / Warner Bros. Discovery: the first revision said closure was unchecked. It closed on 2026-10-06. The two streaming services remain separate.
- The Washington Post: a research pass listed phone as a cancel route; on re-reading, the page names only the online account for direct subscribers.
- Carried over from revision 1 and still standing: streaming churn surveys disagree on order and are old; the federal click-to-cancel rule was vacated on 2025-07-08 and a restart was begun in January 2026.

## Known gaps

- 19 routes rest on secondary sources and 4 could not be confirmed (Optimum, Astound, Anytime Fitness, YMCA). WSJ outside California is unresolved.
- Not re-verified by a second read: the Charter purchase of Cox, the Verizon purchase of Frontier, and the Equinox and HelloFresh amounts. Re-verified by direct read: Xfinity, NYT, Washington Post, the Paramount closing.
- Enforcement history was not searched for Walmart+, DashPass, Shipt, Thrive Market, Costco, Sam's Club, WeightWatchers, Experian, LifeLock, BeenVerified, Mister Car Wash and Terminix, and only partly for Norton, Dropbox, Canva, ExpressVPN, Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
- Whether the court entered the Adobe order, and the state of the LA Fitness and Uber cases after April 2026, are not confirmed.
- No demand data (complaint counts, search volume). That is still what a real "top 100" would need.
- US only. Phone numbers are deliberately omitted; take them from the company's own site, since search results for "how to cancel" are heavily seeded with impostor numbers.
