# NatureServe Explorer API — `GET /api/data/taxon/{elementGlobalId}`
## Probe
```
curl -D - "https://explorer.natureserve.org/api/data/taxon/ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.101363"
```
## Observed, live today
- **No API key, no Origin/Referer requirement observed** — a bare GET from `curl` returns
`HTTP/1.1 200 200` (note: the reason phrase literally echoes the status code, `200 200`, not
`OK`) with a 76,700-byte JSON body.
- The record returned for `ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.101363` is real, current conservation data:
`scientificName: "Amphispiza bilineata"`, `primaryCommonName: "Black-throated Sparrow"`,
`roundedGRank: "G4"`, an embedded `iucn` object (`iucnCode: "LC"`, "Least concern"), and a
`classificationLevel` of "Species" — every text field duplicated three ways
(`*DescEn`/`*DescEs`/`*DescFr`), i.e. the API is trilingual by field suffix rather than by an
`Accept-Language`/locale query parameter.
- **Header/body mismatch**: `Content-Type: application/json;charset=UTF-8` is correct, but the
same response also sends `Content-Disposition: inline;filename=f.txt` — a generic,
meaningless filename hint that contradicts the declared JSON type. A client that honors
`Content-Disposition` for a "Save As" filename would save valid JSON under a `.txt` name.
- `Server: Apache/2.4.68 (Win64) OpenSSL/3.6.4 mod_qos/11.79` — the stack is a **Windows-hosted
Apache** with `mod_qos` (a request-rate/concurrency-control module) loaded, visible directly
in the banner rather than inferred from behavior.
- `Vary: Origin,Access-Control-Request-Method,Access-Control-Request-Headers` is sent even
though no `Origin` header was sent in this request — full CORS preflight-related `Vary`
machinery is always present, not conditional on it being a CORS request.
- `Transfer-Encoding: chunked` is used instead of `Content-Length` for this 76,700-byte body —
an agent trying to pre-size a download buffer from headers alone (as is possible on the
NatureServe-adjacent CITES refusal recorded separately, which does send `Content-Length`)
gets nothing to go on here; the size is only knowable after the full chunked body arrives.
- The id in the URL path (`ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.101363`) is NatureServe's own stable taxon
identifier scheme (`ELEMENT_GLOBAL.<version>.<numeric id>`), not a scientific name or a
common taxonomic code (no ITIS TSN, no GBIF key) — `relatedItisNames` and `elcode` appear as
separate fields inside the body for cross-referencing to those other systems, confirming the
numeric id itself is NatureServe-internal and not reusable against ITIS or GBIF directly.
## How observed

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
