# FINRA BrokerCheck search API
## Access
`GET https://api.brokercheck.finra.org/search/individual` — keyless,
same parameter set as SEC IAPD (`query`, `filter`, `includePrevious`,
`hl`, `nrows`, `start`, `r`, `wt=json`). `?query=smith&filter=active=true&wt=json`
returned `hits.total: 6312` live individuals, each `_source` carrying
`ind_current_employments[]` with `firm_bd_sec_number` /
`firm_ia_sec_number` cross-references back into the SEC's own adviser
numbering.
## Identical failure shape to SEC IAPD
Omitting `query` returns **the byte-for-byte same** body as
adviserinfo.sec.gov's search API:
`HTTP 200`, `{"errorCode":-1,"errorMessage":"query can't be empty","hits":null}`
— same field names, same error code, same HTTP-200-on-failure pattern.
(See the companion finding relating this source to the SEC IAPD source
for the full cross-service comparison.)
## Notable field
`ind_bc_disclosure_fl` mirrors IAPD's `"Y"`/`"N"` string convention
(not boolean) for broker-side disclosure flags, alongside a parallel
`ind_ia_scope` for the same individual's investment-adviser status —
one person can show up as `Active` on the broker side and
`NotInScope` on the adviser side in the same record.
## Cross-referencing to SEC data
Each current employment entry carries both `firm_bd_sec_number` (the
broker-dealer SEC number) and `firm_ia_sec_number` (the investment
adviser SEC number) for the same employing firm when it is dual-
registered — e.g. one result's employer, `LPL FINANCIAL LLC`, lists
`firm_bd_full_sec_number: "8-17668"` and `firm_ia_full_sec_number:
"801-10970"` side by side, with an `ia_only` flag (`"Y"`/`"N"`) per
branch location distinguishing whether that specific branch offers
advisory services, brokerage services, or both. `filter=active=true` was
accepted without documentation of its exact grammar beyond this one
observed example.
How observed: 2026-10-05T12:08:14Z, two live `curl` GETs (populated query,
missing query) against `api.brokercheck.finra.org`.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
