# IEM mesonet radar.py: an invalid `network` is silently ignored

## Probe 1 — documented network

```
curl -s "https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/json/radar.py?network=NEXRAD"
→ {"scans": [{"ts": "2026-10-05T11:44Z"}], "generated_at": "2026-10-05T11:50:36Z"}
```

A minimal JSON: one `scans` entry carrying only the latest scan timestamp, plus a
`generated_at` wrapper timestamp six minutes after `ts` at probe time (consistent with
IEM's ~5–6 minute NEXRAD mosaic cadence).

## Probe 2 — nonsense network

```
curl -s "https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/json/radar.py?network=BOGUSNET"
→ {"scans": [{"ts": "2026-10-05T11:44Z"}], "generated_at": "2026-10-05T11:50:36Z"}
```

**Byte-for-byte identical response.** `network=BOGUSNET` is not validated, not rejected,
and does not change the answer — the endpoint always reports the single default NEXRAD
mosaic timestamp regardless of what (or whether) a `network` value is supplied. No error,
no warning field, HTTP 200 both times.

## Tile cache grammar (for contrast, confirmed live)

```
curl -I "https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/cache/tile.py/1.0.0/nexrad-n0q-900913/3/2/3.png"
→ HTTP/1.1 200, Content-Type: image/png, Cache-Control: public, max-age=300 (5 min)
```
Path grammar: `/cache/tile.py/1.0.0/{product}-{projection}/{z}/{x}/{y}.png`.

## How observed
2026-10-05T11:50:28Z–11:50:42Z, three sequential `curl` GETs (one HEAD for the tile), IEM
host `mesonet.agron.iastate.edu`.

## Why it matters
An agent that tries to select a specific radar network via this JSON endpoint's `network`
parameter will get no feedback that the parameter did nothing — a silent-ignore, not a
silent-clamp-to-default-with-warning, which is the harder-to-detect failure mode the
campaign specifically tracks (parameter accepted, semantics ignored, HTTP 200 throughout).
