# LineageOS download API v2: unknown device and no-builds both silently `[]`

## What it is
`download.lineageos.org/api/v2/devices/{codename}/builds` is LineageOS's
official, documented, keyless JSON API for a device's current nightly
build list.

## Probe — a real, actively-built device
```
curl -s -m 15 https://download.lineageos.org/api/v2/devices/redfin/builds
```
HTTP 200, a JSON array of **4** build objects, most recent dated
`2026-10-05`. Each build has `date`, `datetime`, `type`, `version`, and a
`files[]` array; each file carries `filename`, `filepath`, `os_patch_level`,
`os_sdk_level`, `ota_property_files`, `sha1`, `sha256`, `size`, `type`,
`url` — `size` IS present here (unlike OpenWrt's profiles.json).
Cross-checked `sunfish`, `guacamoleb`, `husky`, `crosshatch` — all return
non-empty, recently-dated build lists the same shape.

## Probe — a plausible but made-up codename
```
curl -s -m 15 https://download.lineageos.org/api/v2/devices/doesnotexist123/builds
```
HTTP 200, body exactly `[]`.

## Probe — a real, known-retired codename
```
curl -s -m 15 https://download.lineageos.org/api/v2/devices/bacon/builds
```
(`bacon` = OnePlus One, officially a real LineageOS codename historically.)
HTTP 200, body exactly `[]` — **byte-identical** to the made-up codename's
response.

## Probe — build `type` values
Across the 4 `redfin` builds returned, every `type` field reads `"nightly"`
and `version` is uniformly `"23.2"` (LineageOS's current major release
train) — no `weekly`/`monthly`/`experimental` build type was observed in
any of the 5 populated devices checked, suggesting `nightly` is effectively
the only value this endpoint emits today regardless of the field existing
for other values historically.

## Why this is a gotcha
There is no 404, no `{"error": "unknown device"}`, and no distinguishing
field anywhere — a genuinely unsupported/retired device and a typo'd
codename are indistinguishable from this endpoint alone. An agent has to
cross-reference the separate LineageOS wiki device list (see the sibling
record in this lane) to tell "this codename never existed" from "this
device exists but has no current build."

How observed: 2026-10-05T11:22:5xZ–11:23:1xZ, `curl` GET, 7 distinct codenames probed, keyless.
