# Z-Wave JS device database: the webapp has no API, GitHub config does

## What it is
`devices.zwave-js.io` is the human-facing device-config browser for the
`node-zwave-js` project; the underlying data is a tree of JSON files in the
`zwave-js/node-zwave-js` GitHub repo under
`packages/config/config/devices/<manufacturer-id-hex>/<device>.json`.

## Probe — the webapp

The root is HTTP 200 (a React app, `x-powered-by: Express`, hosted on
Railway). `/api/devices` is **HTTP 404** with a generic Express
`Cannot GET /api/devices` body — there is no public REST surface on this
host beyond serving the SPA itself.

## Probe — the real data (GitHub, following the repo rename)

(The unredirected call to the old content path returns a `301` with a
`repositories/126682032/...` redirect target — the repo was renamed/moved at
some point; `-L` follows it.) HTTP 200, a 366-entry directory listing, one
directory per Z-Wave manufacturer ID in hex (`0x0000`, `0x0001`, `0x0002`,
`0x0003`, `0x0005`, …, non-contiguous).

HTTP 200, 9 files, e.g. `500_series_controller.json`,
`700_800_series_controller.json`, `husbzb-1.json`, `k8.json` — one JSON
file per device model under that manufacturer.

## Why this is a gotcha
The obvious human URL (`devices.zwave-js.io`) looks API-shaped (it's a
modern web app) but is a dead end for programmatic access; the only route
to the data is GitHub's repo-contents API two levels deep per device, and a
caller following old documentation/blog links to the pre-rename repo path
gets a silent `301` rather than the data.

How observed: 2026-10-05T11:21:08Z (webapp + 404), 2026-10-05T11:21:0xZ (GitHub contents API, 366 dirs + 9-file sample).
