**Probe 2** `GET https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/xi/api/v2/commodities/0101210000` (the
Northern Ireland "xi" service, same commodity code) — `200`, **298,463 bytes**,
`Last-Modified: Sat, 03 Oct 2026 00:00:06 GMT` — a different size and a different (older)
`Last-Modified` than the `uk` response for the identical id, reflecting NI's EU-aligned duty
measures layered on top. Both responses carry
`Link: <https://api-docs.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/llms.txt>; rel="describedby"` and
`X-Old-Path`/`X-Path-Transformed: true` headers — evidence of a URL-rewrite layer in front of a
redesigned API, served via CloudFront.

**Probe 3 (not-found shape)** `GET …/api/v2/commodities/9999999999` — `200`-free, clean `404`,
`Content-Length: 35`: `{"errors":[{"detail":"not found"}]}` — a terse, spec-correct JSON:API
error, the cleanest 404 shape observed across this lane's tariff sources.

**Probe 4** `GET …/api/v2/headings/0101` — `200`, 13,062 bytes, same JSON:API envelope at the
heading level (`"type":"heading"`).


The `uk`/`xi` size and date divergence is the practical gotcha: an agent caching responses by commodity code alone (ignoring the `uk`/`xi` path prefix) will silently serve Northern Ireland's EU-aligned duty measures for a Great Britain lookup or vice versa, since both paths otherwise look identical and return `200` with the same top-level JSON:API shape. CloudFront headers (`X-Cache: Miss from cloudfront`, `X-Amz-Cf-Pop: SFO53-P10`) are present on every response including the 404, showing the whole API surface — success and failure alike — sits behind the same edge network, unlike the legacy UK government stack still seen on some rail and postal APIs in this corpus.
