# NOAA Fisheries "API": three hosts, three different not-found shapes

NOAA FOSS (Fisheries One Stop Shop) is documented as an ORDS REST API, but
the obvious host guesses for it each fail differently — useful precisely
because none of the three failures look alike, so an agent can't rely on a
single "is this the right host" heuristic.

## 1. `www.fisheries.noaa.gov` — the marketing/Drupal site, not the API

A full Drupal 11 themed 404 page (nav, footer, the works) — 130 KB for a
"not found." This host has no ORDS deployment at all; `/ords/*` just falls
through to the CMS's catch-all 404.

## 2. `apps-st.fisheries.noaa.gov` — the real ORDS host, wrong table name

This is a genuine Oracle ORDS deployment (confirmed by the Tomcat-style
error template, distinct from Drupal's), but every table/view name guessed
against it in this lane (`fdw_scientific_species_code`,
`meta_data_foss`, `foss_landings`, `commercial_landings`, `species_group`,
`fdw_species`, `foss_meta_data`) 404s identically — the correct FOSS
resource path was not found in this probe session; this record documents
the host-confusion fact, not the working query shape.

## 3. `api.fisheries.noaa.gov` — does not exist

The single most "obvious" API subdomain guess for a US federal agency does
not resolve at all — a different failure class again (DNS, not HTTP) from
either of the two 404s above.

**Takeaway:** three plausible host guesses for "the NOAA Fisheries API"
produce a CMS 404, an ORDS 404, and a DNS failure respectively — none of
which tell an agent which host is structurally correct without already
knowing apps-st.fisheries.noaa.gov is the real ORDS instance.

How observed: 2026-10-05T10:55:49Z–10:56:10Z, curl 8.x GET (`-v` to confirm
DNS resolution failure on the third host), `--max-filesize 20000000 -m 15`.
