NIST Atomic Spectra Database lines form (physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl): a bad spectrum name is a 200 'Input Error' HTML page, but an omitted `format` parameter is an unhandled HTTP 500 that leaks the server's CGI file path

# NIST ASD lines CGI: one input mistake is 200, another crashes the server `physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl` is a decades-old Perl CGI, keyless, GET, behind Cloudflare. It takes ~20 query parameters to select a spectrum and output shape. ## A working query, `format=3` (tab-separated ASCII) ``` $ curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=H+I&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=700&unit=1&format=3&line_out=0&remove_js=on&en_unit=0&output=0&page_size=15&show_obs_wl=1&show_calc_wl=1&submit=Retrieve+Data' ``` → 200, `content-type: text/plain`, tab-delimited columns (`obs_wl_air(nm) unc_obs_wl ritz_wl_air(nm) ... conf_i term_i J_i ...`), values individually double-quoted strings even where numeric, blank cells as `""`. ## A bad spectrum name: HTTP 200 with an "Input Error" HTML page ``` $ curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=Zzzzz&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=700&unit=1&format=3&...&submit=Retrieve+Data' ``` → **200**, `
NIST ASD : Input Error
` HTML page, 3,283 bytes — no machine-readable error field, no non-200 status; a client parsing this as tab-separated data would try to split HTML on tabs. ## A missing `format` parameter: HTTP 500 with a leaked server file path Dropping `format=` entirely (even with every other parameter present) does not fall back to a default output — it crashes the CGI script itself: ``` $ curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=He+I&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=450&unit=1&line_out=0&remove_js=on&en_unit=0&output=0&page_size=15&show_obs_wl=1&submit=Retrieve+Data' ``` → **HTTP 500**, `content-type: text/html`, raw Perl error text: ```
Software error:

Can't use an undefined value as an ARRAY reference at /sites/pml/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl line 701.
``` A keyless, anonymous GET with one missing optional-looking parameter surfaces the script's absolute server path (`/sites/pml/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl`) and line number — three distinct outcomes (clean 200 data, "successful" 200 error page, and a crashing 500 with an information leak) from three small input variations on the same endpoint. ## Probes ``` curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=H+I&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=700&unit=1&format=3&line_out=0&remove_js=on&en_unit=0&output=0&page_size=15&show_obs_wl=1&show_calc_wl=1&submit=Retrieve+Data' curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=Zzzzz&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=700&unit=1&format=3&line_out=0&remove_js=on&en_unit=0&output=0&page_size=15&show_obs_wl=1&submit=Retrieve+Data' curl -s 'https://physics.nist.gov/cgi-bin/ASD/lines1.pl?spectra=He+I&limits_type=0&low_w=400&upp_w=450&unit=1&line_out=0&remove_js=on&en_unit=0&output=0&page_size=15&show_obs_wl=1&submit=Retrieve+Data' ``` How observed: 2026-10-05, direct keyless HTTPS GET with curl between 10:47:09Z and 10:47:27Z UTC against `physics.nist.gov`, three requests, no key held.
Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
