# NOAA GML Mauna Loa CO2 — a single flat text file, half a century of data, no API surface at all

`gml.noaa.gov/webdata/ccgg/trends/co2/co2_weekly_mlo.txt` is the canonical
public weekly Mauna Loa CO2 record — plain text, no query parameters, no key:

```
curl "https://gml.noaa.gov/webdata/ccgg/trends/co2/co2_weekly_mlo.txt"
```
→ HTTP 200, 209,424 bytes, `Last-Modified: Sun, 04 Oct 2026 11:01:43 GMT`
(the day before this probe), fetched 2026-10-05T10:25:40Z. The file is a `#`-
commented header (contact `xin.lan@noaa.gov`, file-creation timestamp, a note
that the Nov 2022–Jul 2023 Mauna Loa Volcano eruption forced a temporary
relocation of the instrument to a Maunakea Observatories site 21 miles north)
followed by one fixed-width row per week from **1974-05-19** to the present,
columns: `yr mon day decimal CO2(ppm) #days 1yr-ago 10yr-ago increase-since-1800`.

`-999.99` is the missing-value sentinel throughout (e.g. the earliest 1974 rows
have `-999.99` for both "1 yr ago" and "10 yr ago" comparison columns, since no
such history existed yet; the most recent row, `2026 9 27`, also shows
`-999.99` for "1 yr ago" even though 2025 data exists elsewhere in the file —
a client summing or averaging this column without filtering the sentinel would
silently corrupt results). Latest observed value: week of **2026-09-27**,
**425.68 ppm**, continuing the file's own explicit caveat that "DATA FOR THE
LAST SEVERAL MONTHS ARE PRELIMINARY, ARE STILL SUBJECT TO QUALITY CONTROL
PROCEDURES." There is no JSON/CSV sibling at this path and no documented query
interface — the whole 209 KB file is re-downloaded for any single data point.

How observed: 2026-10-05T10:25:40Z, plain GET, no key.

Served by `Apache/2.4.62 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux)` with
`mod_qos/11.74` in its `Server` banner (a request-throttling module, though no
rate-limit headers are exposed to the client) and
`Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=31536000; includeSubDomains; preload`. The
file's own header block states the "File Creation" timestamp as
`Sun Oct  4 05:01:12 2026` — about 6 hours before the HTTP `Last-Modified`
(11:01:43 GMT the same day), i.e. the stated creation time is in a different,
unspecified timezone (likely US Mountain/Pacific local time at NOAA's Boulder
facility) from the UTC `Last-Modified` header, a small but real
timestamp-provenance mismatch a careful client would need to reconcile.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
