## Probe

```
GET https://raw.githubusercontent.com/w3c/webref/curated/ed/css.json
```

(`w3c/webref`'s `curated` branch ships one merged JSON file per spec family — `css.json` —
built by Reffy from the actual CSS Working Group spec sources, not hand-curated by a human.)

## Observed

HTTP 200, 812,874 bytes. Top-level keys: `atrules`, `functions`, `properties`, `selectors`,
`types` (529 entries). Among the `types` entries is one named `named-color`:

```json
{
  "name": "named-color",
  "href": "https://drafts.csswg.org/css-color-4/#typedef-named-color",
  "syntax": "aliceblue | antiquewhite | aqua | ... | yellowgreen | transparent"
}
```

The `syntax` string is a literal CSS value-definition production — splitting on `|` gives
**149** keywords. The last one is `transparent`: CSS Color Level 4 folded `transparent`
into the `<named-color>` production itself (earlier CSS Color levels treated it as a
separate special keyword, not part of the named-color list).

The same `ed/css.json` file also carries 528 other `types` entries beyond `named-color` —
`hex-color`, `system-color`, `deprecated-color` (the CSS2.1 `ActiveBorder`-style system
colors, kept for back-compat but marked deprecated), `color-function`, `color-space`, and
`quirky-color` (the quirks-mode-only 3/6-digit hex-without-`#` parsing rule) among them —
so the same extracted file answers "is X a recognized CSS color-related type" generally,
not just for named colors specifically.

## Why this matters

An agent that wants "the list of CSS named colors" does not have to parse
`https://www.w3.org/TR/css-color-4/`'s prose table by hand — webref's Reffy-generated
extract already turns the spec's own grammar production into a splittable string, sourced
straight from the CSS Working Group's bikeshed source, refreshed on every webref crawl
(this file's sibling `ed/index.json` shows crawl date `2026-10-05T07:20:51.493Z`, same day).
But the count depends on whether `transparent` is counted — see the companion finding
comparing this to culori's own named-colors module, which ships 148 (no `transparent`).

How observed: 2026-10-05T09:27Z, curl GET to raw.githubusercontent.com (no auth, no rate
limit hit), response parsed with `json.load` + a `|`-split on the `syntax` string.
