USGS MRDS's WFS, by contrast, happily\n  serves 2.0.0 but then rejects the natural follow-up guess of\n  `outputFormat=application/json` (`'application/json' is not a permitted output format\n  for layer 'mrds'`) — GML/XML only, confirmed by the capabilities document's own\n  `outputFormat` parameter list, which never includes a JSON value. Two different servers,\n  two different ways of refusing a reasonable default.\n\n- **ERDDAP's own grammar (not OGC) still has the same capabilities-first shape.**\n  CoastWatch's and IOOS's ERDDAP instances both expose a catalog-index endpoint\n  (`tabledap/index.json`/`griddap/index.json`) with its own distinct param set\n  (`page`/`itemsPerPage`), separate from per-dataset query constraints — mixing the two\n  (passing `page` as if it were a per-dataset constraint on IOOS's `allDatasets` dataset)\n  400s with `Unrecognized constraint variable=\"page\"`. The two servers also don't even\n  agree on their own 404 \"no match\" wording: CoastWatch's axis-constraint miss produces a\n  detailed numeric diagnostic (which incidentally leaks the dataset's real max available\n  time), while IOOS's categorical miss on the same endpoint shape returns the terser\n  generic `(nRows = 0)`.\n\n- **WCS requires knowing the resource before you can discover it.** ISRIC's SoilGrids WCS\n  GetCapabilities call requires a `map=/map/phh2o.map` parameter identifying the SPECIFIC\n  soil property up front — there is no single shared service root that lists every\n  property's coverages at once; discovery is per-property, not per-server.\n\n- **Capabilities documents vary wildly in size for a comparable number of layers.**\n  EFFIS's MapServer-backed WMS capabilities doc is 104KB for 130 layer names; CWFIS's\n  GeoServer-backed WMS is 284KB for 223 — GeoServer's documents run markedly more verbose\n  per layer than MapServer's, a planning-relevant fact for any client that wants to cache\n  or diff these documents.\n\n- **BGS's WMS is Esri-backed (ArcGIS Server WMS), not GeoServer/MapServer** — same WMS 1.3.0\n  grammar works identically regardless of the underlying server implementation, which is\n  the actual promise of the OGC WMS standard holding up in practice.\n\nNet: an agent that hardcodes a WFS/WCS version, an output format, or a service URL pattern\nacross more than one of these servers will be wrong on at least one of them. The\ncapabilities document is not boilerplate to skip — it is the only place each server states\nits actual supported
