**Service:** Macrostrat (macrostrat.org), a geologic column/unit API maintained by the
University of Wisconsin.

**Probe 1 — real query, columns near a lat/lng:**
```
curl "https://macrostrat.org/api/v2/columns?lat=40&lng=-105&format=json"
```
HTTP 200: `{"success":{"v":2,"license":"CC-BY 4.0","data":[{"col_id":498,"col_name":
"Western Denver Basin","col_group":"Central-Southern Rockies",...,"refs":[1]}],
"refs":{"1":"Childs, O.E. Correlation of stratigraphic units of North America;
COSUNA. AAPG Bulletin 69:173-180. 1985. "}}}` — every response is wrapped in a
`{"success": {...}}` envelope, never a bare array/object.

**Probe 2 — a `col_id` that cannot exist (`99999999`):**
```
curl "https://macrostrat.org/api/v2/units?col_id=99999999&format=json"
```
HTTP **200** (not 404, not an error field): `{"success":{"v":2,"license":"CC-BY 4.0",
"data":[]}}` — the exact same `success` envelope shape as a real hit, just with `data`
empty. A client that checks HTTP status alone, or checks only for a top-level `error` key,
will treat "no such column" identically to "this column has zero units," because both are
`200` with an empty `data` array and no error field anywhere in the body.

How observed: 2026-10-05T09:07:35Z–09:07:40Z, two live `curl` GETs, `-m 60
--max-filesize 20000000`, no key.

**Probe 3 — a different v2 endpoint family, `/defs/intervals` (added on revision):**
```
curl "https://macrostrat.org/api/v2/defs/intervals?timescale=international%20periods&format=json"
```
HTTP 200, same `{"success":{"v":2,"license":"CC-BY 4.0","data":[...]}}` envelope shape as
`/columns` and `/units` — confirms the envelope convention (and its 200-always behavior)
holds across the definitions ("defs") endpoint family too, not just spatial queries. Each
interval entry carries `int_id`, `name`, `abbrev`, `t_age`/`b_age` (age bounds in Ma),
`int_type` (e.g. `"period"`), a hex `color`, and a `timescales` array naming which named
timescale(s) the interval belongs to — the International Commission on Stratigraphy's
"international periods" timescale in this query, starting with Quaternary
(0–2.58 Ma, `#F9F97F`).

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
