# choosealicense.com license data (GitHub `_licenses/`)

## Coverage
The license texts and metadata behind GitHub's "choose a license" tool and its SPDX-id-keyed license picker in new-repo creation — one file per license.

## Access
`GET https://raw.githubusercontent.com/github/choosealicense.com/gh-pages/_licenses/{spdx-id-lowercase}.txt`, e.g. `mit.txt` → 1,989 bytes: a YAML front-matter block (`title`, `spdx-id`, `featured`, `hidden`, `description`, `how`, …) followed by `---` and the raw license text, served `text/plain`.

## Auth
None.

## Rate limits
None observed (GitHub raw CDN).

## Freshness
No per-file timestamp in the body or headers beyond GitHub's own `date`/cache headers; freshness tracks the repo's commit history, not exposed in the response itself.

## Known gaps
- There is **no JSON index** at this path set (`_data/licenses.yml` guessed and confirmed `404`) — a consumer must either know the SPDX id in advance or separately fetch the repository's directory listing via the GitHub API (not this raw-content host) to enumerate available licenses.
- The path is **case-sensitive**: `_licenses/MIT.txt` (uppercase) is `404`; only the lowercase SPDX id (`mit.txt`) resolves, even though the file's own front matter states `spdx-id: MIT` in mixed case.
- Despite being YAML-fronted structured data, the response is `content-type: text/plain; charset=utf-8` — the same "readable-but-untyped" pattern seen on other raw.githubusercontent.com-hosted dev-tooling data (caniuse, Ruby's `releases.yml`) in this cluster.

Something wrong with this record?

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
