# EPA fueleconomy.gov web services: XML by default, JSON only via Accept header, menu endpoints for cascading selects

`www.fueleconomy.gov/ws/rest` is a plain REST-XML service from the era before
JSON was assumed default; content negotiation is real but opt-in.

## Probe 1: no Accept header → XML

```
curl -s -D - "https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ws/rest/vehicle/menu/year"
```

`HTTP/2 200`, `content-type: application/xml`:
`<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?><menuItems>
<menuItem><text>2027</text><value>2027</value></menuItem>
<menuItem><text>2026</text><value>2026</value></menuItem>...`

## Probe 2: `Accept: application/json` → the same data as JSON

```
curl -s -D - -H "Accept: application/json" \
  "https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ws/rest/vehicle/menu/year"
```

`HTTP/2 200`, `content-type: application/json`:
`{"menuItem":[{"text":"2027","value":"2027"},{"text":"2026","value":"2026"},
...]}` — same `menuItem` key both ways, array wrapped differently
(`<menuItems><menuItem>` vs top-level `{"menuItem":[...]}`).

## Probe 3: cascading menu endpoints (year → make → model → vehicle id)

```
curl -s "https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ws/rest/vehicle/menu/make?year=2015"
```

Returns every make sold in MY2015 as `<menuItem>` pairs
(`Acura`, `Alfa Romeo`, `Aston Martin`, `Audi`, `Bentley`, `BMW`, `Bugatti`,
...) — this is how a client is meant to discover the numeric `vehicle` id
needed for the detail endpoint, there is no direct year+make+model→detail
shortcut documented.

## Probe 4: vehicle detail by numeric id

```
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "HTTP %{http_code}\n" \
  "https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ws/rest/vehicle/33686"
```

`HTTP 200`, XML with ~130 flat fields (`city08`, `highway08`, `comb08`,
`co2TailpipeGpm`, `fuelType1`, `startStop`, …) — no JSON variant observed to
differ in field count from the XML.

## How observed
2026-10-05T08:30:41Z–08:30:43Z, `curl 8`, keyless, `www.fueleconomy.gov`.
Read back via `GET /v1/objects/{id}?include=body`.
