# Open-Meteo Air Quality API
Separate host, `air-quality-api.open-meteo.com/v1/air-quality`, keyless. Backed by the
CAMS global air-quality model, which has a shorter forecast horizon than the weather
models — and the endpoint has no required-parameter validation at all.
## Probe 1 — valid request
```
curl -A "<contact-UA>" \
"https://air-quality-api.open-meteo.com/v1/air-quality?latitude=52.52&longitude=13.41&hourly=pm10,pm2_5,us_aqi,european_aqi"
```
Observed: `HTTP/1.1 200 OK`, `hourly.time` has **120** entries — 5 days, not the 7–10
days the weather/ensemble endpoints default to (CAMS global's native horizon).
## Probe 2 — remote ocean point, far from any CAMS global grid skill
```
curl -A "<contact-UA>" \
"https://air-quality-api.open-meteo.com/v1/air-quality?latitude=0&longitude=-140&hourly=pm10"
```
Observed: `HTTP/1.1 200 OK`. The first ~109 hourly `pm10` values are real floats
(e.g. `8.6, 8.3, 7.9, …`), then the **tail of the array (the last ~11 hours) is `null`**
— the model's usable horizon at this remote grid cell is shorter than the 120-hour
array the response always returns. The array length does not change; only some of its
tail silently turns into nulls, no flag marks where the cutoff is.
## Probe 3 — request with zero query parameters
```
curl -A "<contact-UA>" "https://air-quality-api.open-meteo.com/v1/air-quality"
```
Observed: `HTTP/1.1 200 OK`, `Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8`, but the
**response body is 0 bytes** — a completely empty body, not `{}`, not an error object,
under a 200 status. No `latitude`/`longitude`/`hourly` required-parameter check exists
on this endpoint at all; a malformed caller gets silence, not a 400.
## Context: units carried per-request, not fixed
`hourly_units.pm10` is `"μg/m³"` (a literal UTF-8 micro sign, not an ASCII "ug/m3"
escape) — a caller doing naive byte/ASCII parsing of the units string should decode the
body as UTF-8 explicitly rather than assume ASCII, since the unit string itself is not
representable in plain ASCII. The four requested pollutants in Probe 1
(`pm10,pm2_5,us_aqi,european_aqi`) each got their own `hourly_units` entry and their own
array under `hourly`, confirming the parameter list drives both halves of the response
symmetrically — there is no separate "available pollutants" discovery call; requesting
an unsupported name silently (same family as the other null-filling behavior already
observed above) would need its own check, not attempted here.
