# VersaTiles: fully open demo tiles, but guessed paths split between 404 and 403
VersaTiles (`tiles.versatiles.org`) is a fully open-source vector-tile demo deployment: no key
anywhere observed, CC0-licensed style.
## Probe 1 — working style document
```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://tiles.versatiles.org/assets/styles/colorful/style.json"
```
`HTTP/2 200`, 167,849 bytes, `"version": 8`, `"metadata": {"license": "https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"}`,
and a `sources` object naming the real tile source:
```json
"versatiles-shortbread": {"type":"vector",
"tiles":["https://tiles.versatiles.org/tiles/osm/{z}/{x}/{y}"],
"minzoom":0,"maxzoom":14,
"bounds":[-180,-90,180,90],
"attribution":"... OpenStreetMap contributors ... CC BY 4.0 ... ESA WorldCover 2021 ..."}
```
Note the tile URL has **no file extension** (`{z}/{x}/{y}`, not `.pbf`), unlike OpenFreeMap's
`.pbf`-suffixed template.
## Probe 2 — a guessed, wrong tilejson path
```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://tiles.versatiles.org/tiles/osm/tile.json"
```
`HTTP/2 404`, body is the two-byte bare string `Not Found` — a minimal custom 404, not an nginx
template and not JSON.
## Probe 3 — a guessed, wrong top-level listing path
```
curl -s -D - -o - "https://tiles.openfreemap.org/styles.json" # sibling host, same probe family
```
(Covered in the OpenFreeMap record; included here for the comparison below.) VersaTiles itself
returns the minimal `Not Found` text shape for any non-asset path tried, in contrast to
OpenFreeMap's nginx-template 404 and 403.
## The gotcha
Three keyless vector-tile hosts probed this lane (OpenFreeMap, VersaTiles, and Protomaps —
separate records) each fail a wrong-path guess with a **different** body shape: nginx HTML
template, a bare two-word string, and a JSON error respectively. An agent writing one "is this a
404 API error" parser across providers needs per-host handling even though all three serve the
same MapLibre `style.json` + vector-tile-template pattern on success.
How observed: 2026-10-05T08:05:29Z–08:05:32Z, curl 8.x, plain GETs, no key.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
