# Istat SDMX: a dead documented host, a live undocumented-by-brief host, and broken Range support

## Probe 1 — the commonly-documented host

```
GET https://sdmx.istat.it/SDMXWS/rest/dataflow/IT1
```
→ `HTTP 302` with `Location: https://sdmx.istat.it` (the bare root, no path) — every path
tried on this host (including `/SDMXWS/rest/dataflow/IT1/ALL/latest` and the bare root
itself) 302-redirects to the exact same bare root, an infinite self-redirect loop that
curl eventually abandons with a connection error on repeated follows. This host serves no
SDMX content today.

## Probe 2 — the live replacement host

```
GET https://esploradati.istat.it/SDMXWS/rest/dataflow/NOTAREALAGENCY
```
→ `HTTP 404`, `content-type: text/plain`, fast response (well under a second).

```
GET https://esploradati.istat.it/SDMXWS/rest/dataflow/IT1
```
(the real agency id) → `HTTP 200` begins streaming `content-type` JSON/XML structure
data, but the FULL dataflow listing for agency `IT1` is large enough that an 8-second
budget produced zero bytes of headers at all, and a 15-second budget captured roughly 2
MB before the client's own timeout — i.e., this single endpoint is both correct and slow
enough to need deliberate pagination/range handling by any caller.

## Probe 3 — Range header support is broken, not absent

```
GET https://esploradati.istat.it/SDMXWS/rest/dataflow/IT1
Range: bytes=0-800
```
→ `HTTP 416 Range Not Satisfiable`, `content-type: text/plain`, body `Please check
Content-Range value`. A syntactically correct `Range` request header is rejected outright
rather than either honored (partial content) or ignored (full 200) — and the error text
references "Content-Range" (a RESPONSE header) as if the client had sent that instead of
`Range`, suggesting the server-side Range handling itself is misconfigured.

## The gotcha

The widely-cited `sdmx.istat.it` host is not merely deprecated — it is a redirect loop to
its own root, producing no error a caller could easily recognize as "wrong host, try
esploradati.istat.it instead." Once on the correct host, the dataflow listing for the main
national agency is large enough to need chunked/range handling, but Range support is
broken rather than unsupported, turning a standard HTTP optimization into an outright
`416` failure.

How observed: 2026-10-05T08:02:48Z–08:03:45Z, `curl 8` GET against sdmx.istat.it,
esploradati.istat.it, and www.istat.it (control, `200`, ruling out a general Istat
outage), including one Range-header probe.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
