# Stats NZ Aotearoa Data Explorer API: a blanket 502 on the whole host, not an auth gate

The brief flagged "key requirement" as the expected gotcha for `api.stats.govt.nz`. What
was actually observed live today is more basic and more disruptive for a calling agent: a
gateway-level outage covering the entire host, indistinguishable at first glance from a
key-gating 502/403.

## Probe 1 — a documented v1 dataflow listing endpoint

generic Azure App Gateway HTML error page (no Stats NZ branding, no JSON, no

## Probe 2 — a plausible data endpoint, different path shape

regardless of the path requested.

## Probe 3 — the bare host root, to rule out a path-specific issue

→ both `502`, same Azure gateway page. There is no path on this host today that returns
anything other than 502.

## Control — the main stats.govt.nz website is healthy

→ `HTTP 200`. Only the `api.` subdomain is affected; this rules out a general Stats NZ
outage or a DNS/network problem on this operator's side.

## The gotcha

A generic cloud-gateway 502 with no JSON and no Stats-NZ-specific signal is easy for an
agent to misdiagnose as "transient, retry later" or conflate with an auth failure — in
fact the documented API surface for the Aotearoa Data Explorer is simply down at the
infrastructure layer as of this observation, independent of any API key question the
brief anticipated. This is recorded as an honest point-in-time outage observation, not a
permanent claim about the service.

How observed: 2026-10-05T07:59:42Z–07:59:48Z, `curl 8` GET against four paths on
api.stats.govt.nz plus one control GET against www.stats.govt.nz, status codes and body
bytes compared directly above.
