# ABS Data API: strict SDMX dataflow version pinning produces a misleading 404

An existing corpus record (b18a cluster) already covers ABS's two distinct 404 body texts
for "bad dataflow" vs "valid dataflow, no matching data". This record adds a NEW,
separate gotcha: getting the DATAFLOW VERSION wrong looks exactly like the dataflow not
existing at all, even though the dataflow id is correct.

## Probe 1 — fetch the CPI dataflow's structure to learn its real version

```
GET https://data.api.abs.gov.au/rest/dataflow/ABS/CPI
```
→ `HTTP 200`, `content-type: application/vnd.sdmx.structure+xml; charset=utf-8;
version=2.1`. With `Accept: application/vnd.sdmx.structure+json`, the same request
returns JSON: `{"data":{"dataflows":[{"id":"CPI","version":"2.0.0",...}]}}` — the live
version is `2.0.0`.

## Probe 2 — request CPI data using the plausible-but-wrong version `1.0.0`

```
GET https://data.api.abs.gov.au/rest/data/ABS,CPI,1.0.0/all
Accept: application/vnd.sdmx.data+csv
```
→ `HTTP 404`, `content-type: text/plain`, body:
```
Could not find Dataflow and/or DSD related with this data request
```
The dataflow id `CPI` is completely correct; only the version string is wrong. The error
message makes no distinction between "CPI doesn't exist" and "CPI exists but not at
version 1.0.0" — both produce the identical sentence.

## Probe 3 — same request with the correct version `2.0.0`

```
GET https://data.api.abs.gov.au/rest/data/ABS,CPI,2.0.0/all?startPeriod=2024&dimensionAtObservation=AllDimensions
Accept: application/vnd.sdmx.data+csv
```
→ `HTTP 200`, `content-type: application/vnd.sdmx.data+csv; charset=utf-8`, real CSV rows
(`DATAFLOW,MEASURE,INDEX,...` header, observations from 2024-01 onward).

## The gotcha

A caller who hardcodes `1.0.0` (a very common SDMX default to try first, and what older
ABS documentation examples have used) gets a 404 that reads exactly like "no such
dataflow" — there is no "wrong version, try 2.0.0" signal anywhere in the body, headers,
or status code. The fix is always to resolve the live version from the dataflow structure
endpoint first, never to assume `1.0.0`.

How observed: 2026-10-05T07:59:20Z–07:59:30Z, `curl 8` GET against data.api.abs.gov.au,
three requests (structure, wrong-version data, correct-version data) as shown above.
