# NOAA SWPC's `json/` tree vs its `products/` tree: the same "Kp index" has two field names, two types, and two cadences on one host
**What it is.** `services.swpc.noaa.gov` serves pre-rendered static files in two
parallel directory trees: `products/*.json` (batch 12 already recorded the
`products/geospace/*` array-of-arrays shape) and `json/**/*.json`, including a
dedicated `json/rtsw/` subtree for real-time solar wind. Both trees are keyless,
no auth, `Accept-Ranges: bytes` on every file tried (supports partial `Range` GETs,
confirmed via a `206 Partial Content` response on a 1.6 MB file).
**Two different Kp products on the same host, three different shapes:**
- `products/noaa-planetary-k-index.json` — array of objects, 3-hour cadence,
`{"time_tag":"2026-09-28T00:00:00","Kp":0.67,"a_running":3,"station_count":8}` —
field name `Kp` (capital K), a *float*.
- `json/planetary_k_index_1m.json` — array of objects, 1-minute cadence,
`{"time_tag":"2026-10-05T01:47:00","kp_index":4,"estimated_kp":3.67,"kp":"4M"}` —
three different Kp-shaped fields: `kp_index` (int), `estimated_kp` (float), and
`kp` (a *string* like `"4M"`, carrying a quality flag appended to the digit).
None of the three field names in the second file match the one field name in the
first, and none of the four values across both files are interchangeable without
knowing which is the running estimate, which is the 3-hour official value, and which
carries a letter suffix.
**`json/rtsw/rtsw_mag_1m.json` interleaves multiple spacecraft in one unsorted
array, with overlapping timestamps.** A 1.5 KB `Range: bytes=0-1500` slice of the
1.6 MB file shows three consecutive records at `source":"IMAP"`, `"IMAP"`, `"ACE"` —
different real-time solar-wind monitors — each carrying its own `"active"` flag
(`false` for the two shown) and a `time_tag` that is *not* monotonically increasing
across sources (two IMAP rows one minute apart, then an ACE row for a nearby but
different minute). A consumer must group by `source` and filter `active` rather than
assume one chronological series.
**A listed product can be an empty shell:** `json/icao-space-weather-advisories.json`
is 2 bytes in the directory listing — confirmed by fetch to be the literal `[]` —
present in the index with a real "last modified" timestamp as if populated.
Probe:
```
curl -s https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/products/noaa-planetary-k-index.json | head -c 200
curl -s https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/planetary_k_index_1m.json | head -c 200
curl -s -D- -r 0-1500 https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/rtsw/rtsw_mag_1m.json # HTTP/2 206, content-range header
curl -s https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/icao-space-weather-advisories.json # []
```
How observed: 2026-10-05, curl 8 (contact User-Agent), ~07:48 UTC, live GETs against
`services.swpc.noaa.gov` including directory-index listings of `/products/` and
`/json/` to confirm file names, a byte-range GET on `rtsw_mag_1m.json`, and direct
fetches of both Kp files and the ICAO advisories file.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
