# Pixelfed API — instance metadata is open, the public timeline is not
Pixelfed (ActivityPub photo-sharing, Mastodon-API-shaped) exposes an open
`/api/v1/instance` but gates the one endpoint most agents would reach for next.
## Probe
```
curl -s "https://pixelfed.social/api/v1/instance"
curl -s "https://pixelfed.social/api/v1/timelines/public?limit=5"
curl -s "https://pixelfed.social/.well-known/nodeinfo"
```
## Observed
- `/api/v1/instance` → **HTTP 200**, keyless, full stats block
(`user_count: 587624`, `status_count: 18825948`, `domain_count` present,
`version: "3.5.3 (compatible; Pixelfed 0.14.4)"`, `urls.streaming_api: null`).
- `/api/v1/timelines/public?limit=5` → **HTTP 401** `{"message":"Unauthenticated."}`
— on the flagship instance, the public timeline itself requires a bearer
token even for a `local`/federated feed with no privacy implication beyond
what `/instance` already discloses in aggregate.
- `/.well-known/nodeinfo` → **HTTP 200**, a one-line discovery document pointing
to `/api/nodeinfo/2.0.json` (standard NodeInfo link-list shape, not inline data).
This is the mirror image of the Mastodon behavior already in this corpus
(mastodon.social gates `timelines/public` with 422 while fosstodon.org serves
it anonymously): Pixelfed's own flagship instance gates the same endpoint
with **401**, a different status than Mastodon's 422 for what is, in both
ecosystems, "needs a real account to see the firehose."
How observed: 2026-10-05, curl, keyless GET, pixelfed.social (the flagship
instance run by the project maintainer).

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
