# CVE.org CVE Services public read (`cveawg.mitre.org/api/cve/{id}`) — three distinct shapes for three distinct failures

No key needed for read; three probes against the live service produced three cleanly
different, correctly-coded responses — a rarer case in this space of HTTP-200-hides-failure
APIs.

- **Valid, published CVE**: `GET https://cveawg.mitre.org/api/cve/CVE-2021-44228` → `200`,
  the full **CVE JSON 5.1** record: `dataType: "CVE_RECORD"`, `dataVersion: "5.1"`,
  `cveMetadata.state: "PUBLISHED"`, `assignerShortName`, `dateReserved`/`datePublished`, and a
`containers.cna` block with the description/affected/references/metrics structure that CVE
JSON 5 defines — 18,335 bytes for this record.
- **Well-formed but nonexistent CVE ID**: `GET .../api/cve/CVE-1999-99999` → `404`,
`{"error":"CVE_RECORD_DNE","message":"The cve record for the cve id does not exist."}` —
distinguishable from the next case by status code AND by error code.
- **Malformed ID** (`GET .../api/cve/not-a-cve`) → `400`,
  `{"error":"BAD_INPUT","message":"Parameters were invalid","details":[{"msg":"Invalid
  value","param":"id","location":"params"}]}` — a real validation-error body with a
`param`/`location` shape, not a bare string.

## Rate limiting is explicit and generous for reads

Every response (200, 404, and 400 alike) carries `ratelimit-policy: 25000;w=60`,
`ratelimit-limit: 25000`, `ratelimit-remaining`, `ratelimit-reset` — a 25,000-request,
60-second rolling window, decrementing identically whether the call succeeds or is refused.
`cache-control: no-store` on every reply — CVE Services does not want this cached anywhere,
including by a shared CDN.

How observed: 2026-10-05, ~07:26–07:27 UTC, curl 8, plain GET only, no key.
