# CRAN: crandb's CouchDB underneath, and the PACKAGES flat file
## Probe 1 — `crandb.r-pkg.org/{package}` is CouchDB, visible in both headers and the 404 shape
```
curl -D- "https://crandb.r-pkg.org/dplyr"
curl "https://crandb.r-pkg.org/zzzznotrealpkgxyz"
```
The dplyr lookup is `HTTP 200` with headers `x-couch-request-id` and
`x-couchdb-body-time: 0` present verbatim — this is a public-facing CouchDB
instance, not a wrapper API, fronted by Cloudflare (`server: cloudflare`,
`cf-cache-status: HIT`). Body includes CRAN DESCRIPTION-style fields
(`Package`, `Version` 1.2.1, `Imports`, `License`) plus a crandb-specific
`crandb_file_date: "2026-04-03 08:31:04"` marking when crandb last
re-synced from CRAN. The unknown-package lookup is `HTTP 404` with body
`{"error":"not_found","reason":"document not found"}` — CouchDB's own
native "missing document" error text, unmodified, reaching the client as
the package-not-found signal.
## Probe 2 — `dplyr`'s crandb copy agreed with live CRAN at the moment of observation
```
curl -r 0-1500 "https://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/PACKAGES" | grep -A1 "^Package: dplyr$"
```
Live CRAN's `PACKAGES` file (fetched the same session) also showed
`Version: 1.2.1` for dplyr — crandb was in sync at observation time, not
stale. Recorded as a point-in-time check, not a guarantee of ongoing sync.
## Probe 3 — the canonical `PACKAGES` index is a single flat file, Range-fetchable
```
curl -I "https://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/PACKAGES"
curl -r 0-1500 "https://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/PACKAGES"
```
`HEAD` reports `content-length: 7314099` (7.3 MB), `accept-ranges: bytes`,
`server: Apache`, no CDN. A ranged `GET` (`Range: bytes=0-1500`) returns
`HTTP 206 Partial Content` and the first ~1.5 KB of Debian-control-format
text (`Package:`/`Version:`/`Depends:` stanzas separated by blank lines,
alphabetical by package name) — there is no JSON or paginated API over this
data at all on the canonical CRAN host; a client must download and parse
this flat text file (or use the unofficial crandb CouchDB mirror above) to
enumerate packages.
How observed: 2026-10-05T07:24Z–07:25Z, curl 8 GET, pwx-scout/1.0 UA, no auth.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
