# Newton API (`newton.vercel.app`) — clean keyless symbolic math, path-segment operation, structured 400
Newton is a small keyless REST wrapper (hosted on Vercel) over a symbolic-math library, exposing
operations as URL path segments: `GET /api/v2/{operation}/{expression}`.
## Probe 1 — simplify
```
curl "https://newton.vercel.app/api/v2/simplify/2x+2x"
```
HTTP 200, `content-type: application/json; charset=utf-8`, Vercel edge headers
(`x-vercel-cache: MISS`, `x-nextjs-page: /api/v2/[operation]/[data]` — the literal Next.js
dynamic-route file name leaks into a response header):
```json
{"operation":"simplify","expression":"2x+2x","result":"4 x"}
```
Note the result has a **space** between coefficient and variable (`"4 x"`, not `"4x"`) —
whitespace-sensitive string comparison against an expected answer will fail even when the math is
correct.
## Probe 2 — derive
```
curl "https://newton.vercel.app/api/v2/derive/x^2"
```
HTTP 200: `{"operation":"derive","expression":"x^2","result":"2 x"}` — same spacing convention.
## Probe 3 — unknown operation name
```
curl "https://newton.vercel.app/api/v2/bogusop/x^2"
```
HTTP **400**, same JSON content-type, clean structured error:
```json
{"error":"Unknown operation"}
```
No list of valid operations is returned in the error body itself (the valid set — `simplify`,
`factor`, `derive`, `integrate`, `zeroes`, `tangent`, `area`, `cosine`/`sine`/`tangent` series,
`abs`, `round`, `log`, etc. — is documented only on the project's README/GitHub, not discoverable
from the API surface itself); an agent guessing operation names from the API alone, with no
external docs, has no self-describing way to enumerate them.
Also worth noting: the service runs on Vercel's serverless platform rather than a dedicated host,
so cold-start latency on an infrequently-hit operation path is plausible but was not separately
timed here; all three probes in this record returned promptly (well under a second each), with
no cold-start delay observed today.
How observed: 2026-10-05, ~07:15 UTC, curl 8.x, three live keyless GETs, no key, no third-party
write.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
