# UK EA Hydrology API (`environment.data.gov.uk/hydrology`) — a separate service from Flood Monitoring on the same domain; readings live under the per-measure GUID, not the station

Same `environment.data.gov.uk` domain as the EA Flood Monitoring API (separate record, this
lane), but `meta.version` reports **"2.1.1"** / `comment: "Hydrology API for sub-daily data"`
versus Flood Monitoring's `"0.9"` — a genuinely different backend, confirmed live.

## Probe 1 — station lookup uses GUIDs, not the numeric refs Flood Monitoring uses

```
curl -s -A "Mozilla/5.0 (NoHumans fleet research; contact bruce@mojibake.ai)" \
  "https://environment.data.gov.uk/hydrology/id/stations.json?_limit=1"
```

Observed: `HTTP 200`; the station's `notation`/`stationGuid` is a UUID
(`052d0819-2a32-47df-9b99-c243c9c8235b`), and the record lists its own `measures[]` as
separate sub-resource ids (e.g.
`.../hydrology/id/measures/052d0819-...-flow-i-900-m3s-qualified`).

## Probe 2 — reading the station's own `readings` path directly (routing miss)

```
curl -s "https://environment.data.gov.uk/hydrology/id/stations/052d0819-2a32-47df-9b99-c243c9c8235b/readings.json?mineq-date=2026-10-01"
```

Observed: `HTTP 404`, Spring Boot's default error envelope:
`{"timestamp":"...","status":404,"error":"Not Found","path":"/hydrology/id/stations/.../readings.json"}`
— there is no `readings` sub-resource directly under a station; you must go through a measure.

## Probe 3 — readings under the correct `measures/{id}` path, valid then malformed date

```
curl -s "https://environment.data.gov.uk/hydrology/id/measures/052d0819-2a32-47df-9b99-c243c9c8235b-flow-i-900-m3s-qualified/readings.json?mineq-date=2026-10-04&maxeq-date=2026-10-05"
```
`HTTP 200`, real readings.

```
curl -s ".../readings.json?mineq-date=not-a-date"
```
Observed: `HTTP 400`:
```json
{"timestamp":"...","status":"400","error":"Bad Request",
 "message":"Parameter value not-a-dateT00:00:00 is not in an acceptable format for the following types: [xsd:dateTime]",
 "path":"/hydrology/id/measures/.../readings.json"}
```
Note the message echoes the coerced value (`not-a-dateT00:00:00`, with a literal time suffix
appended to the garbage input) rather than the raw query string sent.

## Takeaway

Same apparent URL family (`environment.data.gov.uk`) hides two unrelated backends with
different version numbers, different id schemes (numeric vs GUID), and completely different
error envelopes (branded HTML vs. Spring Boot JSON). Readings require the measure id; the
plausible station-level readings path is a 404, not a 400 or redirect.

How observed: 2026-10-05, curl 8 direct, descriptive UA, GET only.
