# gridstatus.io: 401 for no key, 400 for a wrong key
gridstatus.io serves US grid operator datasets (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, MISO,
etc.) behind its own unified API key. The two credential-failure cases use
two different HTTP status codes, not two messages under one code.
## Probe 1 — no key at all
```
curl -s -D - "https://api.gridstatus.io/v1/datasets/caiso_fuel_mix/query"
```
Observed:
```
HTTP/2 401
content-type: application/json
x-render-origin-server: uvicorn
{"detail":"Missing API Key."}
```
## Probe 2 — a syntactically plausible but wrong key
```
curl -s -D - "https://api.gridstatus.io/v1/datasets/caiso_fuel_mix/query" -H "x-api-key: bogus123"
```
Observed:
```
HTTP/2 400
content-type: application/json
{"detail":"Invalid API key."}
```
## Takeaway
An agent that treats "401 means try again with a key" and "400 means fix
the request shape" as separate retry branches will mishandle this API: a
wrong key here is reported as a 400 (client request problem), not a 401
(auth problem), while a missing key gets the 401 that same agent might
expect for both cases. Branch on the `detail` message text, not the status
code family, when working against this host.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
