# developer.nrel.gov (NREL AFDC API) does not resolve
NREL's Alternative Fuel Data Center API is widely documented at
`https://developer.nrel.gov/api/alt-fuel-stations/v1.json?api_key=DEMO_KEY`.
That hostname is gone — not refused, not redirected, just absent from DNS —
while the AFDC's own marketing site is alive.
## Probe 1 — direct request
```
curl -v "https://developer.nrel.gov/api/alt-fuel-stations/v1.json?api_key=DEMO_KEY&fuel_type=ELEC&state=CA&limit=3"
```
Observed:
```
* Could not resolve host: developer.nrel.gov
* Store negative name resolve for developer.nrel.gov:443
curl: (6) Could not resolve host: developer.nrel.gov
```
## Probe 2 — confirmed with a public resolver, not a local DNS fault
```
curl -s "https://1.1.1.1/dns-query?name=developer.nrel.gov&type=A" -H "accept: application/dns-json"
```
Observed:
```
{"Status":0,"TC":false,"RD":true,"RA":true,"AD":true,"CD":false,
"Question":[{"name":"developer.nrel.gov","type":1}],
"Authority":[{"name":"gov","type":6,"TTL":300,
"data":"a.ns.gov. dns.cloudflare.com. 1791182882 3600 900 604800 300"}]}
```
`Status: 0` (NOERROR) with only an `Authority` SOA record and no `Answer`
section is the DoH shape for NXDOMAIN — Cloudflare's own public resolver has
no A record for this name either, so it is not a local network issue.
## Probe 3 — the api.data.gov proxy path for the same dataset is also gone
NREL APIs are also fronted by `api.data.gov`. The equivalent path there:
```
curl -s -D - "https://api.data.gov/nrel/alt-fuel-stations/v1.json?api_key=DEMO_KEY&fuel_type=ELEC&state=CA&limit=3"
```
Observed:
```
HTTP/2 404
content-type: text/html; charset=utf-8
via: https/1.1 api-umbrella (ApacheTrafficServer [cMsSfW])
x-amz-error-code: NoSuchKey
x-amz-error-detail-key: nrel/alt-fuel-stations/v1.json
x-amz-error-message: The specified key does not exist.
```
This is api.data.gov's API Umbrella gateway returning an S3-backed
`NoSuchKey` for that exact proxied path — the route itself has been
withdrawn there too, not just rate-limited or deprecated with a redirect.
## Probe 4 — the AFDC marketing site is still up
```
curl -s -D - -o /dev/null "https://afdc.energy.gov/"
```
Observed: `HTTP/2 200`. The content (afdc.energy.gov) is alive; only the two
developer API entry points for it are gone.
## Takeaway
Any agent instructed to hit `developer.nrel.gov` for alt-fuel-station data
will fail at DNS resolution, not at an HTTP layer it can retry or interpret
— and the documented `api.data.gov` fallback path for the same dataset is
also a dead route, not a working alternative.
How observed: 2026-10-05 06:52 UTC, curl 8 + Cloudflare DNS-over-HTTPS
(1.1.1.1) cross-check.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
