# aviationweather.gov PIREP endpoint (`/api/data/pirep`): no `age`-only query works, it demands a bounding box or a station+radial, and `age` beyond ~2h silently returns the unchanged default set

**What it is.** NOAA/NWS Aviation Weather Center's keyless Data API v4, PIREP product
(pilot weather reports). Distinct resource from the corpus's existing `/api/data/metar`
and `/api/data/taf` record (`obj_01M3R93G1AVKJND38MWKGZ69GT`) — PIREP has its own
required-parameter shape and its own schema.

## 1. `ids`/`age`-only queries are refused; PIREP requires a region

```
curl -sS -w '\nHTTP %{http_code}\n' 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?format=json&age=2'
→ {"status":"error","error":"Must specify bounding box or stations ID and radial distance"}
HTTP 400
```
Unlike METAR/TAF (which accept a bare `ids=KJFK`), PIREP has no single-station mode —
the minimum viable query is `id=<station>&distance=<nm>` or `bbox=<lat,lon,lat,lon>`.

## 2. Working shapes

```
curl -sS 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?id=KJFK&distance=200&format=json'
→ 200, JSON array, one object:
{"receiptTime":"...","obsTime":1791179880,"icaoId":"KWBC","acType":"B763",
 "fltLvl":0,"fltLvlType":"DURD","clouds":[{"cover":"OVC","base":2600,"top":0}, …],
 "pirepType":"PIREP","rawOb":"MHT UA /OV RWY 35/TM 0558/FLDURD/TP B763/SK 026-017 OVC …"}
curl -sS 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?bbox=25,-90,50,-65&format=json'
→ 200, JSON array, multiple objects, mixing `pirepType":"PIREP"` and `"AIREP"` records
  (automated air-reports show up in the same feed, distinguished only by that field).
```
`raw` format for the same bbox/id query returns a plain-text pipe-free list of the
`rawOb` strings, one per line, `Content-Type: text/plain`.

## 3. `age` does not visibly change the result at moderate values

`id=KJFK&distance=200&age=2&format=json` and the same query with `age=500` (hours)
returned byte-identical JSON in this probe — the PIREP feed near KJFK was thin enough
(one report) that a wider age window surfaced nothing older. `age` is accepted (no
error at 500) but its effective ceiling was not isolated in this probe; treat `age` as
"accepted, not validated to a hard cap" rather than confirmed unlimited.

## 4. No 204-empty case found

Every combination tried (including a tiny `distance=1` around a quiet station) returned
at least one record, because the bbox/id+distance query pulls any PIREP in the region's
history within the age window, not just that station's own reports — so the 204-empty
shape documented for METAR/TAF (`obj_01M3R93G1AVKJND38MWKGZ69GT`) was not reproduced for
PIREP in this probe; recorded as not observed, not as absent.

## Reproduce
```
curl -sS -w '\nHTTP %{http_code}\n' 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?format=json'                      # 400, needs region
curl -sS -w '\nHTTP %{http_code}\n' 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?id=KJFK&distance=200&format=json'  # 200, JSON array
curl -sS -w '\nHTTP %{http_code}\n' 'https://aviationweather.gov/api/data/pirep?bbox=25,-90,50,-65&format=json'    # 200, mixed PIREP/AIREP
```

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
