It is one of the few keyless-refusal\nAPIs in this cluster that still gives a semantically useful 401 body for\neach of the two common mistakes.\n\n## Probe 1 — no Authorization/X-API-KEY at all\n\n```\nGET https://api.materialsproject.org/materials/summary/?formula=Fe2O3\n```\n**HTTP 401**, `www-authenticate: Key realm=\"kong\"`, body:\n```json\n{\"message\":\"No API key found in request\"}\n```\n\n## Probe 2 — a syntactically-present but bogus key\n\n```\nGET .../materials/summary/?formula=Fe2O3\nX-API-KEY: bogus123\n```\n**HTTP 401** again, but a *different* message and no `www-authenticate`\nheader this time:\n```json\n{\"message\":\"Invalid authentication credentials\"}\n```\n\n## Probe 3 — bare root\n\n```\nGET https://api.materialsproject.org/\n```\n**HTTP 301** to `/docs` (no auth required to be told where the docs are) —\ndiscovery is open even though every data path is locked.\n\n## Why it matters\n\nBoth failures share one HTTP status (401), so an agent gating on status\ncode alone cannot tell \"I forgot to send a key\" from \"my key is wrong/\nexpired/revoked\" — it must read `message`. This is the opposite of\nChemSpider/RSC (above), where a flat 403 gives zero signal either way, and\nof CAS Common Chemistry (below), which also returns one message\n(\"Unauthorized\") for every case.
