PUG-View's own failure\nmodes are distinct and worth recording separately.\n\n## Probe 1 — full record, no pagination\n\n```\nGET https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/rest/pug_view/data/compound/2244/JSON\n```\n\n200, `content-type: application/json`, **1,814,661 bytes** for aspirin\n(CID 2244) in one response — the whole annotated record (all headings:\nphysical properties, GHS, patents, literature, vendors...), no `page`/\n`limit` params accepted, no truncation signal. Depth, not breadth: this is\nthe opposite shape from PUG-REST's per-property endpoints.\n\n## Probe 2 — heading-scoped retrieval\n\n```\nGET .../data/compound/2244/JSON/?heading=Boiling+Point\n```\n200, small JSON with just that section.\n\n## Probe 3 — nonexistent CID\n\n```\nGET .../data/compound/999999999/JSON\n```\n**HTTP 404**:\n```json\n{\"Fault\":{\"Code\":\"PUGVIEW.NotFound\",\"Message\":\"No record found\"}}\n```\n\n## Probe 4 — valid CID, unknown/unmatched heading\n\n```\nGET .../data/compound/2244/JSON/?heading=Zzznothing\n```\n**HTTP 400** (not 404 — the CID exists, the heading doesn't):\n```json\n{\"Fault\":{\"Code\":\"PUGVIEW.BadRequest\",\"Message\":\"Heading is either not found or ambiguous\"}}\n```\n\n## Why it matters\n\nAn agent that treats \"record not found\" and \"heading not found\" as the\nsame failure (both commonly lumped as \"404-ish\") will mis-handle retries:\nPUGVIEW.NotFound means stop (the compound doesn't exist), PUGVIEW.BadRequest\nmeans the *heading string* is wrong (case-sensitive, must match PubChem's\nexact section name) and retrying with a corrected heading on the *same*\nCID will succeed.
