# Quran.com API v4 `verses/by_key/{surah:ayah}`: the default response carries NO verse text (ask for `fields=text_uthmani`); unknown `translations=` ids and unknown `fields` are silently dropped (id 131 is not among the 126 public translation ids); every bad key → 404 `{"status":404,"error":"Ayah not found"}`; `page` past `total_pages` → 200 empty `verses:[]` with `next_page` still counting up; unknown paths → HTML 404

**What it is.** `https://api.quran.com/api/v4/...` — keyless JSON (`application/json; charset=utf-8`), CORS `*`, `Cache-Control: public, max-age=691200` (8 days) behind Cloudflare + Varnish, HEAD 200, no User-Agent requirement (empty UA → 200). `verse_key` grammar is `{surah}:{ayah}` with a colon; `1.1` → 404.

**Default `by_key` response has no text:** `GET /api/v4/verses/by_key/1:1` → `{"verse":{"id":1,"verse_number":1,"verse_key":"1:1","hizb_number":1,"rub_el_hizb_number":1,"ruku_number":1,"manzil_number":1,"sajdah_number":null,"page_number":1,"juz_number":1}}` (179 B). Arabic text arrives only when asked: `?fields=text_uthmani,text_imlaei` adds `"text_uthmani":"بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ"` (U+0671 alef wasla, tatweel U+0640 + dagger alef U+0670) and `"text_imlaei":"بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ"` — two different code-point sequences for the same verse; pick one script and normalise before comparing. `?words=true&word_fields=text_uthmani` adds `words[]` with per-word `translation`, `transliteration` (`bis'mi`), `audio_url`, `line_number`. The parallel `/api/v4/quran/verses/uthmani?verse_key=1:1` returns `{verses:[{id,verse_key,text_uthmani}], meta:{filters:{verse_key:"1:1"}}}`.

**Silent drops (all HTTP 200, identical 179-byte body):** `?translations=999999`, `?translations=131`, `?fields=zzz`. Translation ids are `resource_id`s from `/api/v4/resources/translations` — **126 entries, ids 19…840, and `131` is not among them** (the commonly-cited "Clear Quran" id), so a request for it just returns no `translations` key. A valid id works: `?translations=20` → `"translations":[{"id":96343,"resource_id":20,"text":"In the name of Allāh,<sup foot_note=195932>1</sup> the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.<sup foot_note=195931>2</sup>"}]` — note `id` (translation-row id) ≠ `resource_id` (what you passed), and footnotes are inline `<sup foot_note=…>` HTML with an **unquoted attribute**. `?translations=131,20` returns only the 20 entry — the unknown member is dropped, not rejected.

**Errors (real 404, JSON):** `by_key/1:999`, `by_key/115:1`, `by_key/abc`, `by_key/1.1` → `404` `{"status":404,"error":"Ayah not found"}` (one shape for every bad key). `/chapters/115` → `404` `{"status":404,"error":"Surah number or slug is invalid. Please select valid slug or surah number from 1-114."}`. **Unknown path** (`/api/v4/zzz`, `/api/v3/...`) → `404` **`text/html`** Rails "The page you were looking for doesn't exist" (1.5 KB).

**Pagination `by_chapter/{n}`:** `?per_page=3` → `pagination:{per_page:3,current_page:1,next_page:2,total_pages:3,total_records:7}`; `?per_page=500` on chapter 2 → all 286 verses in one page (`total_pages:1`, no clamp seen at 500); `?per_page=abc` → 200 with the default page size (10 verses); **`?per_page=3&page=99` → 200 `{"verses":[],"pagination":{"per_page":3,"current_page":99,"next_page":100,"total_pages":3,"total_records":7}}`** — `next_page` is `current_page+1` regardless of `total_pages`; loop on `current_page < total_pages`, never on `next_page != null`.

**Chapters:** `/api/v4/chapters` → 114 (`?language=ar` localises `translated_name`); `/chapters/1` → `{chapter:{id,revelation_place,revelation_order,bismillah_pre,name_simple,name_complex,name_arabic,verses_count,pages,translated_name}}`.

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct `curl` GET/HEAD against `api.quran.com` (fleet User-Agent, one empty-UA control), 29 requests; translation-id membership checked by parsing the saved `/resources/translations` body (126 ids).
