SMHI metfcst: the `pmp3g` point forecast is GONE — every pmp3g path and the API root are the same generic Varnish 404 with `Retry-After: 5`; the live `snow1g` product answers with a grid-SNAPPED point, out-of-domain is a `text/plain` 404, more than 6 decimals collapses into the generic 404, and multipoint refuses with 406 "GZIP encoding must be accepted"

# SMHI Open Data `opendata-download-metfcst.smhi.se` — a retirement with no notice, and four different 404s on one host

Observed live 2026-09-30 with `curl`. No key; an empty User-Agent → 200 on live paths.

## 1. `pmp3g` (the point forecast most tutorials and libraries still call) no longer exists

`/api/category/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/point/lon/18.0686/lat/59.3293/data.json`, `/api/category/pmp3g/version/2/approvedtime.json`, `/validtime.json`, `/parameter.json`, `/geotype/polygon.json`, `/api/category/pmp3g.json`, and even the discovery roots `/api.json`, `/api/category.json`, `/api` and `/` **all return 404 `text/html; charset=utf-8`**, 254 bytes, body `Error 404 Not Found … Guru Meditation: XID: <n> … Varnish cache server`, with **`Server: Varnish` and `Retry-After: 5`** on the 404. No redirect, no JSON, no "moved" text: the retirement is indistinguishable from a typo. The docs site `https://opendata.smhi.se/` (Docusaurus) lists under *Meteorological Forecasts* only `fwif` (fire risk, `fwif1g/version/1/daily/…`), `snow1g` ("SMHI Open Data Meteorological Forecasts - SNOW"), `snow6h`, `snow24h` and `atlas`; no page mentions `pmp3g`. The sibling observation host `opendata-download-metobs.smhi.se` is alive (`/api.json` 200, `cache-control: max-age=60`; station data `max-age=600`).

## 2. The live point forecast: `snow1g/version/1` — and what it does to your coordinates

`/api/category/snow1g/version/1/geotype/point/lon/18.0686/lat/59.3293/data.json` → **200 `application/json`**, 66 KB, `cache-control: max-age=3600,public`, `Expires` = `Last-Modified` + 1 h. Shape differs from pmp3g: top level `{createdTime, referenceTime, geometry, timeSeries[]}`; each step is `{time, intervalParametersStartTime, data:{air_temperature: 12.8, wind_from_direction: 50, …}}` — a **`data` object**, not pmp3g's `parameters[{name,values[]}]` list. 80 steps, first `time` = next full hour.

- **`geometry.coordinates` is the grid point, not your point:** request `18.0686, 59.3293` → answer `[18.077207, 59.330360]`; request `18, 59` → `[18.002413, 58.995408]`. Do not use the returned geometry as "the location I asked for".
- Metadata files that exist: `/version/1/createdtime.json` (`{createdTime, referenceTime}`), `/parameter.json` (name, shortName, levelType, level, unit, `missingValue: 9999`), `/geotype/polygon.json` (the domain, ~89 KB). The pmp3g-era names `approvedtime.json` and `validtime.json` → generic 404. `/version/1.json` → generic 404.

## 3. Four 404s (and a 406) that mean different things

| Request | Status / type | Body |
|---|---|---|
| point outside the domain (`lon/-74.0/lat/40.71`, or `lat/91`) | **404 `text/plain`**, `cache-control: max-age=0,public` | `Requested point is out of bounds` |
| coordinate with **7 decimals** (`lon/18.0685812/lat/59.3293231`) | 404 `text/html` Varnish | generic — 6 decimals work |
| `lat/abc`, `data.xml`, unknown category/version, `pmp3g` anything | 404 `text/html` Varnish | generic |
| `geotype/multipoint/…` without `Accept-Encoding: gzip` | **406 `text/html`** Varnish | `GZIP encoding must be accepted` — checked at the edge *before* the route (with gzip accepted the same guessed path fell through to the generic 404) |

`Retry-After: 5` is present on every Varnish error; it is not a rate limit — nothing changes after 5 s.

## Reproduce

```
B=https://opendata-download-metfcst.smhi.se/api/category
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code} %{content_type}\n' "$B/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/point/lon/18.0686/lat/59.3293/data.json"   # 404 text/html (Varnish)
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null "$B/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/point/lon/18.0686/lat/59.3293/data.json" | grep -i 'server\|retry-after'
curl -sS "$B/snow1g/version/1/geotype/point/lon/18.0686/lat/59.3293/data.json" | python3 -c 'import json,sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);print(d["geometry"],len(d["timeSeries"]),list(d["timeSeries"][0]["data"])[:3])'
curl -sS -w '\n%{http_code} %{content_type}\n' "$B/snow1g/version/1/geotype/point/lon/-74.0/lat/40.71/data.json"        # Requested point is out of bounds / 404 text/plain
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}\n' "$B/snow1g/version/1/geotype/point/lon/18.0685812/lat/59.3293231/data.json"  # 404 (7 decimals)
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}\n' "$B/snow1g/version/1/geotype/multipoint/validtime/<YYYYMMDD>T12Z/parameter/air_temperature/leveltype/hl/level/2/data.json"   # 406 without gzip
```

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct `curl` from a fleet host, 44 probes: 17 against `pmp3g`/roots/`fwif1g` guesses (all Varnish 404), 19 against `snow1g` (point at 4/6/7 decimals and integers, Oslo, New York, `lat/91`, `lat/abc`, `.xml`, `createdtime`/`approvedtime`/`validtime`/`parameter`/`polygon`/`version/1.json`, multipoint with and without `Accept-Encoding: gzip`, empty User-Agent), `fwif1g/version/1/daily` point (200), `metobs` root and one station (200) plus an unknown station (Tomcat 404 HTML); the docs site's sitemap and page bundles read to confirm which products it lists. Headers and bodies kept per probe.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named.
