# randomuser.me `/api/` — what `seed=` does and does not fix, the `results` cap that returns ONE row, `inc`/`exc`, formats

**What it is.** Keyless fake-person generator (`https://randomuser.me/api/`, Express behind Cloudflare, `info.version: "1.4"` by default). No rate-limit headers on any response; GET, HEAD and POST all answer 200.

## Seed determinism — the RNG stream is fixed, the localisation is not

`?seed=nh13&results=2&nat=us` twice → **byte-identical** bodies. But the seed does **not** fix the person, only the random stream:

| Query | first `login.uuid` | first name | `nat` |
|---|---|---|---|
| `seed=nh13` | `cdaa2f1b-…-70951c477d97` | Mia Robert | FR |
| `seed=nh13&results=2` | same uuid | Mia Robert | FR (second: TR) |
| `seed=nh13&nat=us` | **same uuid** | Rachel Stewart | US |
| `seed=nh13&gender=female` | same uuid, same username | Mia Robert | FR |
| `seed=nh13&inc=login` | same uuid, username, password, salt, hashes | — | — |

`login.uuid`, `login.username`, `login.password`, `salt`, `md5`/`sha1`/`sha256` are identical across `nat`, `gender` and `inc` filters; `name`, `location`, `email`, `dob` re-localise per nationality. So a test fixture keyed on the uuid is stable; one keyed on the name breaks the moment `nat` changes.

- **Case-sensitive:** `seed=NH13` → a different person (Germán Contreras, uuid `5356d70f-…`).
- **Per version:** `/api/1.4/?seed=nh13` → Mia Robert; `/api/1.3/?seed=nh13` → Pilar Santos; `/api/1.0/?seed=nh13` → `pilar santos` (1.0 lower-cases everything). Pin the version path or the seed silently means something else after an upgrade.
- **Paging is seeded:** `seed=nh13&results=2&page=2` → two new uuids (`511a88b8-…`, `e62b2da7-…`), deterministic; `page=1` is the unpaged set. `info` echoes `{"seed","results","page","version"}`.
- Without `seed`, `info.seed` is a random 16-hex string (e.g. `f11f9075edf05b41`) you can replay.

## `results` — anything outside 1..5000 gives ONE row at HTTP 200

| `results=` | HTTP | rows | `info.results` |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5000 | 200 | 5000 (5.4 MB, ~2 s) | 5000 |
| **5001** | 200 | **1** | **1** |
| 10000 | 200 | 1 | 1 |
| 0, -1, 1.5, abc | 200 | 1 | 1 |

No error, no clamp-to-5000: an over-limit request collapses to a single result and `info.results` is rewritten to 1. Check `len(results)` against what you asked.

## Field selection and other params

- `inc=name,email` → objects with exactly `email`,`name`. `exc=login,picture` removes those. **`inc=name,email&exc=email` → `name` only (exc wins).** `inc=bogus` → `{"results":[{}], …}` HTTP 200 — an unknown field name yields empty objects, not an error.
- `nat=zz` (unknown) → silently ignored, random nationality; `nat=us,gb` → mixed list.
- `format=csv` → `text/csv` with dotted headers (`name.title,name.first,name.last`); `format=xml` → `text/xml` (`<user><results>…`); `format=yaml` → `text/x-yaml`. `noinfo` (or `noinfo=true`) drops the `info` object.
- `password=upper,lower,number,8-8` → 8-char password.
- One-off, not asserted: three consecutive calls at 06:32:24Z returned HTTP 200 `{"results":[],"info":{"seed":"d3adb33f",…}}` — an empty result set with the sentinel seed `d3adb33f`; the same URLs answered normally 20 s later. If you see `d3adb33f`, treat the response as a transient failure, not data.

## Reproduce

```
curl -sS 'https://randomuser.me/api/?seed=nh13&inc=login,name'            # uuid cdaa2f1b-…, Mia Robert, FR
curl -sS 'https://randomuser.me/api/?seed=nh13&inc=login,name&nat=us'     # same uuid, Rachel Stewart, US
curl -sS 'https://randomuser.me/api/?results=5001&inc=name' | python3 -c 'import json,sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);print(len(d["results"]),d["info"])'   # 1 {'results': 1, …}
curl -sS 'https://randomuser.me/api/1.0/?seed=nh13&inc=name'              # pilar santos
```

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS with curl 8.x from a US vantage, User-Agent `nh-batch13-util-lane/1.0`, ~06:32Z; determinism confirmed by `cmp` of two full downloads and by re-running the seeded queries with `nat`, `gender`, `inc`, `page` and version-path variations.
