# OpenCitations Index: `opencitations.net/index/api/...` is a 301 to `api.opencitations.net`; v2 ids need a `doi:` prefix (bare DOI → 400 text/plain); unknown *and* malformed DOIs both return HTTP 200 `[]`; `citation-count` is a string; no pagination (1,806 rows in one 659 KB body)
OpenCitations Index (COCI and the other indexes merged) serves citation links for a DOI/PMID/OMID. Keyless and no rate-limit headers; the traps are in the id grammar and the "not found" shape.
## What was observed
**Host redirect.** Every documented path on `opencitations.net` — `/index/api/v1/citations/{doi}`, `/index/api/v2/citations/doi:{doi}`, `citation-count`, `references`, `metadata` — answers **301 `Moved Permanently`** (17-byte text body) with `Location: https://api.opencitations.net/index/v{1,2}/...` (the `/api` path segment is dropped). A client that does not follow redirects gets nothing.
**v2 id grammar.** `GET /index/v2/citations/10.1038/nature12373` (no prefix) → **400 `text/plain`**: `HTTP status code 400: the value '10.1038/nature12373' is not valid for parameter 'id' in operation '/index/v2/citations/{id}'. Example: /index/v2/citations/doi:10.1108/jd-12-2013-0166`. With `doi:` → 200. `pmid:23903748` also works (`citation-count` → the same `"1806"`). v1 paths take the bare DOI (`/index/v1/citation-count/10.1038/nature12373` → 200).
**Not-found and malformed are indistinguishable from "zero citations":**
| Probe (followed to api.opencitations.net) | Status | Body |
|---|---|---|
| `/index/v2/citations/doi:10.9999/does-not-exist-xyz` | 200 `application/json` | `[]` (2 bytes) |
| `/index/v2/citations/doi:notadoi` (not a DOI at all) | 200 | `[]` |
| `/index/v2/citation-count/doi:10.9999/does-not-exist-xyz` | 200 | `[{"count": "0"}]` |
| `/meta/v1/metadata/doi:10.9999/does-not-exist-xyz` (OpenCitations Meta) | 200 | `[]` |
| `/index/v2/bogus/doi:10.1038/nature12373` (unknown operation) | **404 `text/plain`** | `HTTP status code 404: the operation requested does not exist` |
Only the operation name is validated; an unknown or garbage DOI is a silent empty list.
**Count is a string, wrapped in a list.** `/index/v2/citation-count/doi:10.1038/nature12373` → `[{"count": "1806"}]` (v1: identical). Compare numerically after `int()`.
**No pagination and multi-id strings.** `/index/v2/citations/doi:10.1038/nature12373` → 200, **1,806 objects, 658,798 bytes, 6.6 s**, keys `oci, citing, cited, creation, timespan, journal_sc, author_sc`. In v2 `citing`/`cited` are **space-separated id bundles**: `"omid:br/0629059472 doi:10.1063/1.5011231 openalex:W3100592981"` (the same row in v1 is the bare DOI `"10.1063/1.5011231"`). `timespan` is an ISO-8601 duration (`P4Y7M19D`); `journal_sc`/`author_sc` are the strings `"no"`/`"yes"`, not booleans. `references` of the same DOI: 34 rows (11 KB). There is no `page`/`limit` parameter on these paths; you get the whole list.
**Meta.** `/meta/v1/metadata/doi:10.1038/nature12373` → one object with `id` = `"doi:10.1038/nature12373 openalex:W2159974629 pmid:23903748 omid:br/06120344846"` and `author` as one string of `Name [orcid:… omid:…]; Name […]` — parse, don't split on commas.
**Headers.** `content-type: application/json`, `Server: Apache/2.4.10 (Win32)`, no `x-ratelimit-*`, no `retry-after`; a placeholder `authorization:` header changes nothing on a public read.
## Reproduce
```
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code} %{redirect_url}\n' https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/citation-count/doi:10.1038/nature12373 # 301 → https://api.opencitations.net/index/v2/...
curl -sSL https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/citation-count/doi:10.1038/nature12373 # [{"count": "1806"}] (string)
curl -sSL https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/citations/10.1038/nature12373 # 400 text/plain "... not valid for parameter 'id' ..."
curl -sSL https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/citations/doi:notadoi # []
curl -sSL https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/bogus/doi:10.1038/nature12373 # 404 text/plain "the operation requested does not exist"
curl -sSL https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2/citations/doi:10.1038/nature12373 | python3 -c 'import json,sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);print(len(d),d[0]["citing"])' # 1806 omid:br/... doi:... openalex:...
```
How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS with curl 8.17.0 (default User-Agent), 25 probes on `opencitations.net` with and without `-L`; the count 1,806 is the value on that date.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
