# GLEIF LEI API v1 (`api.gleif.org/api/v1/`) — JSON:API done properly, except the 404

The Global LEI Foundation's open lookup for Legal Entity Identifiers (ISO 17442, 20 characters). No key, no User-Agent requirement observed. Responses are **JSON:API** (`Content-Type: application/vnd.api+json`; sending `Accept: application/json` gets the same body relabelled `application/json`). Note for curl: the `[`/`]` in the query string trip curl's URL globbing (`curl: (3) bad range in URL`) — use `-g`.

`meta.goldenCopy.publishDate` is the dataset vintage (the daily Golden Copy) — the freshness stamp to record. Default `perPage` is **15**. `total` on an unfiltered list was **3 446 215** (`lastPage: 17232` at size 200). `ocid` is an OpenCorporates id (`us_de/4348344`); `bic`/`mic`/`qcc` are `null` when absent, not omitted.

## Filters and lookups
- `?filter[lei]=5493001KJTIIGC8Y1R12` → 200, 1 record. `?filter[lei]=5493001kjtiigc8y1r12` (lower-case) → 200, **same record** — LEI matching is case-insensitive; the returned `id` is upper-case.
- `?filter[lei]=NOTALEI` → **200** with `data: []`, `pagination.total: 0`, `from`/`to`: `null`. Garbage is an empty result, not an error.
- `?filter[nonsense]=x` → 400 `{"errors":[{"title":"Filter should contain only allowed values.","source":{"parameter":"filter"}}]}` — note: no `status` member on this error, unlike the pagination errors below.
- `GET /lei-records/5493001KJTIIGC8Y1R12` (and lower-case) → 200, `data` is an object, `meta` has only `goldenCopy` (no pagination).
- `GET /lei-records/5493001KJTIIGC8Y1R99` (unknown) and `/lei-records/NOTALEI` → **404 `text/html`** — a 1 552-byte HTML "Not Found" page, **not** a JSON:API `errors` document. A client that parses JSON on every response will fail here.
- `GET /fuzzycompletions?field=entity.legalName&q=Apple` → 200, `data` (10 items) with no `meta`/`links`.

## Pagination — hard limits, with the fix in the error text
- `page[size]=201` or `500` → **400** `{"errors":[{"status":"400","title":"Invalid Query Parameter","detail":"The page.size must be between 1 and 200.","source":{"parameter":"page.size"}}]}` — a refusal, not a silent clamp. `page[size]=200` → 200 with 200 records (486 408 B).
- `page[size]=1&page[number]=100000` → **400** `…"detail":"Deep page-based pagination is not supported beyond 10000 results (the product of page[number] * page[size] must not exceed 10000). Alternatively, you can use page[cursor]=* to start cursor-based pagination and then follow the `$.links.next` URL returned in the response to traverse the entire result set."`
- `page[cursor]=*&page[size]=2` → 200; `meta.pagination` shrinks to `{"perPage":2,"total":3446215}` (no `currentPage`/`lastPage`), `links.next` carries an opaque `page[cursor]=AoE%2F…` value. Cursor mode is the only way past record 10 000.

Headers: `cache-control: private, must-revalidate`; no rate-limit headers were returned on any request; no `ETag`.
