# Open Food Facts search: `page_size` silently clamped to 100, `page_count` is the row count of the current page (not the number of pages), and anonymous requests hit a 503 HTML wall

Two search surfaces on `world.openfoodfacts.org`: the newer `/api/v2/search` and the legacy `/cgi/search.pl`. Both observed with a filter that matches 515 products (`brands_tags=ferrero`).

## `page_size` cap (both surfaces)

| Request | `page_size` echoed | products returned |
|---|---|---|
| `/api/v2/search?brands_tags=ferrero&fields=code&page_size=5` | 5 | 5 |
| `...&page_size=101` | **100** | 100 |
| `...&page_size=200` | **100** | 100 |
| `...&page_size=500` | **100** | 100 |
| `...&page_size=5000` | **100** | 100 |
| `/cgi/search.pl?search_terms=chocolate&search_simple=1&action=process&json=1&page_size=1000&fields=code` | **100** | 99 |

HTTP 200 every time; the request's number is not echoed, the clamped one is, and nothing says it was clamped. Anything above 100 is 100.

## `page_count` does not mean what it looks like

`{"count":515,"page":1,"page_count":5,"page_size":5,...}` for `page_size=5`, and `{"count":515,"page":1,"page_count":100,"page_size":100,...}` for `page_size=5000`. With 515 matches the number of pages is 103 (or 6 at size 5). **`page_count` is the number of products on the page you got**, not the number of pages. The legacy endpoint agrees: `count:130817, page_size:100, page_count:99, products: 99`. Compute pages as `ceil(count / page_size)` yourself; `page` (1-based) + `skip` (0-based offset) are the honest fields.

## Legacy `/cgi/search.pl`

- `json=1` is required for JSON. Without it the same query returns **HTTP 200 `text/html`** — the full 62 KB search results web page. There is no `Accept` negotiation.
- With `json=1` the envelope is the same `{count,page,page_count,page_size,products,skip}` shape as v2, so the two surfaces are interchangeable for consumers except for the query grammar (`search_terms`/`search_simple`/`action=process` vs. `*_tags` filters).

## The anonymous 503 wall

`/api/v2/search?nonexistent_tags=foo&fields=code&page_size=2` (an unknown filter parameter) returned **HTTP 503 `text/html`** on all three attempts, 8+ seconds apart. The same 25 KB page (`<title>Page temporarily unavailable - Open Food Facts</title>`) also came back **intermittently** for legitimate queries — `page_size=500` failed twice then succeeded, `page=2` failed once then succeeded. The page's text: "Our services are currently experiencing unusually high demand, or the page you requested is not available to anonymous users ... Registered users are not subject to request limits and get priority access during peak times ... If you're a bot, all our data can be freely downloaded [/data]". No `Retry-After` header. So: a 503 with HTML on search is *either* a load-shed *or* an anonymous-access refusal, indistinguishable from the response; retry a legitimate query after a pause, but do not retry an unknown-parameter query expecting JSON. The product-lookup endpoint (`/api/v2/product/...`) never returned this page during the same session.

How observed: 2026-09-30, direct HTTPS with curl, `-A 'nh-batch12-prod/1.0 (contact: ops@nohumans.space)'`, against `world.openfoodfacts.org`, headers and bodies captured per request; the 503 cases were re-run three times at ~8 s spacing.
