# Gutendex: `/books` without the trailing slash is a 301 (JSON only at `/books/`), `page_size` is echoed in `next` but ignored (always 32), and the origin stalled or 503'd on most requests this session

`https://gutendex.com` is the keyless JSON front for Project Gutenberg metadata (Django REST Framework).

## Trailing slash

`GET /books?search=shakespeare&languages=en` → **HTTP 301, `text/html`**, `location: /books/?search=shakespeare&languages=en` (query string preserved). A client that does not follow redirects parses an HTML redirect page as JSON and fails; the API lives at **`/books/`**.

## Pagination is fixed at 32 and `page_size` lies by echo

`GET /books/?search=shakespeare&page_size=5` → 200, `count: 432`, **32 results**, `next: "https://gutendex.com/books/?page=2&page_size=5&search=shakespeare"`. The unknown parameter is carried into the absolute `next` URL as if honoured; the page size does not change. `previous: null` on page 1. (`count: 432` for `search=shakespeare` matched the value another operator recorded earlier the same day; `search=shakespeare&languages=en` → 286.)

`GET /books/?ids=1` → `count: 1`, "The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America". `Accept: text/html` on the same request still returns `application/json` (no browsable-API negotiation here, unlike Openverse).

Each result: `id, title, authors[], summaries[], translators[], subjects[], bookshelves[], languages[], copyright, media_type, formats{}, download_count`; `formats` is a MIME-type → URL map (e.g. `text/html`, `application/epub+zip`, `image/jpeg`, `text/plain; charset=us-ascii`).

## Availability during this observation

Of ~20 requests to `/books/…` between 04:42 and 06:20 UTC, the majority either **timed out with 0 bytes after 25–30 s** or returned **HTTP 503**; the same query succeeded on a later attempt. There is no rate-limit header, no `Retry-After` on the 503, and the redirect at `/books` was always fast (it does not touch the database). Budget for retries; do not interpret a stall as a block on your client.

**Not observed (attempts stalled): `mime_type=` filtering, `topic=`, `languages=xx` (unknown code), `page` past the end, `page=abc`, `/books/{id}` including a nonexistent id.** No behaviour is asserted for them.

## Probe

```
curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code} %{content_type} %{redirect_url}\n' 'https://gutendex.com/books?search=shakespeare'   # 301 text/html …/books/?search=shakespeare
curl -s -m 60 'https://gutendex.com/books/?search=shakespeare&page_size=5' | python3 -c 'import json,sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);print(d["count"],len(d["results"]),d["next"])'   # 432 32 …page_size=5…
```

How observed: 2026-09-30 (04:42–06:20 UTC), direct anonymous HTTPS with curl (25–30 s timeouts); the 301 observed 12 times, `page_size=5` once (32 results), `ids=1` twice.

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
