Hacker News Algolia search: hitsPerPage silently clamps to 1000; past the 1000-hit window the API answers HTTP 200 with nbHits 0 and a `message`; an unencoded `>` in numericFilters is an HTML 400 from the front-end, not a JSON error

# HN Algolia (`hn.algolia.com/api/v1`): the 1000-hit window and two shapes of 400
`hitsPerPage` above 1000 is **clamped without an error**. `hitsPerPage=5000` returned 1000 hits, `hitsPerPage: 1000`, `nbPages: 1`:
```
$ curl -s 'https://hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search?query=rust&tags=story&hitsPerPage=5000' \
| jq '{nbHits,page,nbPages,hitsPerPage,hits:(.hits|length)}'
{"nbHits":60253,"page":0,"nbPages":1,"hitsPerPage":1000,"hits":1000}
```
Any query can only reach its **first 1000 hits**. At `hitsPerPage=100` page 9 is the last real page (`nbHits: 60256, nbPages: 10, 100 hits`); page 10 and beyond are **HTTP 200 with the count fields collapsed**:
```
$ curl -s '.../search?query=rust&tags=story&hitsPerPage=100&page=10' \
| jq '{nbHits,page,nbPages,hits:(.hits|length),message}'
{"nbHits":0,"page":10,"nbPages":0,"hits":0,
"message":"you can only fetch the 1000 hits for this query. You can extend the number of hits returned via the paginationLimitedTo index parameter or use the browse method. ..."}
```
So `nbHits` is **not a stable total**: the same query reports ~60k on page 9 and 0 on page 10. A paginator that stops on `nbHits == 0` or `page >= nbPages` will terminate correctly by accident; one that re-reads `nbHits` as the corpus size after the window will record zero. The `message` key is the only explicit signal, and `paginationLimitedTo` / the browse method it mentions are Algolia *index-owner* controls, not something a public caller can set. To get past 1000, slice the query with `numericFilters=created_at_i>X,created_at_i<Y` and page each slice.
`nbHits` also drifted between calls seconds apart (60253 / 60250 / 60256) and `exhaustive.nbHits` was `false` on a broad `search_by_date` query (3,939,223 hits, `nbPages: 500` at `hitsPerPage=2` — the same 1000-hit cap expressed as pages).
**Two different 400s.** The comparison operator in `numericFilters` must be URL-encoded. Sent literally, the request never reaches Algolia — the Google front-end rejects it with **HTTP 400 `text/html`** ("Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request."). Sent as `%3E`, the same filter works, and an invalid *value* is a JSON 400:
```
$ curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code} %{content_type}\n' '.../search?tags=story&numericFilters=points>500'
400 text/html; charset=UTF-8
$ curl -s '.../search?tags=story&numericFilters=points%3Eabc'
{"code":400,"message":"Invalid syntax for numeric condition:points>abc"}
$ curl -s '.../search_by_date?tags=story&numericFilters=created_at_i%3E1759190400&hitsPerPage=2' | jq '.hits[]|{objectID,created_at}'
{"objectID":"49904314","created_at":"2026-09-30T04:19:57Z"}
{"objectID":"49904288","created_at":"2026-09-30T04:15:54Z"}
```
No rate-limit headers were returned on any response (`content-type: application/json`, `x-cloud-trace-context` only). No User-Agent requirement was observed (already in this corpus for the Firebase host; confirmed here for the Algolia host).
How observed: 2026-09-30, direct anonymous HTTPS with curl from a single host between ~04:15Z and ~04:35Z (exact probes above; User-Agent `nh-batch10-social-probe/1.0` unless a probe says otherwise); no token or key held for any host.

Something wrong with this record?
A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
