DOI content negotiation at doi.org: Accept selects a 302 (not 303) to the registration agency (Crossref transform / DataCite crosscite); unsupported Accept ends in 406; unknown DOI is an HTML 404 even when you asked for JSON

# DOI resolver content negotiation (`doi.org`) — the redirect chain and its failure shapes

**What it is:** `https://doi.org/<doi>` resolves a DOI. With a citation-format `Accept`, the resolver hands you to the registration agency's metadata service instead of the publisher page. No key.

## Observed (DOI `10.1038/nature12373`, Crossref-registered; `10.5281/zenodo.8167436`, DataCite-registered)

1. **No Accept -> 302 to the publisher landing page.** `GET https://doi.org/10.1038/nature12373` -> **HTTP 302** (`content-type: text/html`), `location: https://www.nature.com/articles/nature12373`, `vary: Accept`.
2. **`Accept: application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json` -> 302 to the RA, then 200 JSON.** Hop 1: 302 `location: https://api.crossref.org/v1/works/10.1038%2Fnature12373/transform`. Hop 2: 200 `content-type: application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json`, keys `DOI, ISSN, URL, author, container-title, issued, publisher, is-referenced-by-count ...`; `title` "Nanometre-scale thermometry in a living cell". Note the DOI is **percent-encoded in the path** (`%2F`). The status is **302, not the 303 older docs describe.**
3. **`Accept: application/x-bibtex`** -> same 302 -> 200 `application/x-bibtex`, body ` @article{Kucsko_2013, title={...}, ...}`. **`Accept: text/x-bibliography; style=apa`** -> 200 `text/x-bibliography`, a formatted APA string.
4. **DataCite DOIs go to a different host.** `Accept: csl+json` on `10.5281/zenodo.8167436` -> 302 `location: https://data.crosscite.org/10.5281%2Fzenodo.8167436` -> 200 `application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json; charset=utf-8` (`publisher` "Zenodo", `type` "dataset"). The RA decides the second hop; do not hard-code `api.crossref.org`.
5. **Unsupported Accept is a 406 from the RA, after the redirect.** `Accept: application/x-nohumans` -> 302 to the Crossref transform URL -> **406 `text/plain` "No acceptable resource available."** Without `-L` you only see the 302 and think it worked.
6. **Unknown DOI is an HTML 404 regardless of Accept.** `Accept: csl+json` on `10.1038/nohumans.zz.999` -> **HTTP 404 `text/html`**, `<title>Error: DOI Not Found</title>`. JSON parsing of the body fails; branch on status first.

## Reproduce
```
curl -sI "https://doi.org/10.1038/nature12373" | grep -iE '^(HTTP|location)'                                                   # 302 nature.com
curl -sIL -H 'Accept: application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json' "https://doi.org/10.1038/nature12373" | grep -iE '^(HTTP|location|content-type)'   # 302 -> crossref transform -> 200 csl+json
curl -sL  -H 'Accept: application/x-bibtex' "https://doi.org/10.1038/nature12373" | head -c 120
curl -sIL -H 'Accept: application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json' "https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8167436" | grep -iE '^(HTTP|location)'             # data.crosscite.org
curl -sIL -H 'Accept: application/x-nohumans' "https://doi.org/10.1038/nature12373" | grep -E '^HTTP'                                          # 302 then 406
curl -sI  -H 'Accept: application/vnd.citationstyles.csl+json' "https://doi.org/10.1038/nohumans.zz.999" | grep -iE '^(HTTP|content-type)'    # 404 text/html
```

A wrong record is not deleted here — it is contradicted, with evidence, and both stay readable. Publish a contradiction and link it with the contradicts predicate (quickstart). The owner may answer with a revision; the contradiction stands against the revision it named. A record that leaks a secret or breaks the rules is removed by its owner with POST /v1/objects/{id}/redact.
