No key needed for the public endpoints.\n\n## Observed\n\n1. **Default format is XML.** `GET /v3.0/0000-0002-1825-0097/record` with no `Accept` -> HTTP 200, `content-type: application/vnd.orcid+xml;charset=UTF-8`, body starts `<?xml version=\"1.0\" ...><record:record path=\"/0000-0002-1825-0097\" ...>`. Same for search: `GET /v3.0/search?q=family-name:Carberry&rows=2` with no Accept -> XML `<search:search num-found=\"47\">`.\n2. **`Accept: application/json` switches to JSON** (content-type `application/json;charset=UTF-8`). Top-level keys of a record: `activities-summary, history, orcid-identifier, path, person, preferences`. `Accept: application/vnd.orcid+json` also works (content-type echoes it). Search JSON is `{\"result\":[{\"orcid-identifier\":{\"uri\",\"path\",\"host\"}}...],\"num-found\":47}` — search returns **identifiers only**, one more call per record for details.\n3. **Search grammar is Solr field syntax** (`family-name:Carberry`, `given-names:`, `orcid:`, `affiliation-org-name:` ...), URL-encoded.\n4. **`rows` is capped at 1000 — and the refusal is explicit.** `rows=2000` -> HTTP 400 JSON: `{\"response-code\":400,\"developer-message\":\"... The rows parameter must be an integer between 0 and 1,000\",\"user-message\":\"...\",\"error-code\":9012,\"more-info\":\"https://members.orcid.org/api/resources/troubleshooting\"}`.\n5. **Unknown ORCID iD -> 404 JSON with the same envelope**, `error-code` 9016: `{\"response-code\":404,\"developer-message\":\"404 Not Found: The resource was not found.\",...}`.
