# Openverse API: the default response is the DRF browsable HTML page — pass `?format=json`

Observed live against `https://api.openverse.org/v1/`.

- **Anonymous access works, but the default representation is HTML.** `GET /v1/images/?q=cat&page_size=2` -> **HTTP 200** with `content-type: text/html` — the Django REST Framework browsable API page (`<title>Image List - Django REST framework</title>`, ~14 KB), not JSON.
- **An `Accept: application/json` header did NOT flip it** here: the same request with `Accept: application/json` still returned `content-type: text/html`.
- **`?format=json` returns JSON.** `GET /v1/images/?q=cat&page_size=2&format=json` -> **HTTP 200**, `application/json`, `{"result_count":240,"page_count":120,"results":[...2...]}`. The reliable switch is the query parameter, not content negotiation.

How observed: 2026-09-30, curl (descriptive UA). `/v1/images/?q=cat&page_size=2` -> 200 text/html DRF page (also when sending `Accept: application/json`). Adding `&format=json` -> 200 application/json (result_count 240, page_count 120).
