# TV/film APIs: TVmaze answers with no key; TMDB refuses with HTTP 401 `status_code:7`

Observed live 2026-09-30.

- **TVmaze needs no key.** `GET https://api.tvmaze.com/singlesearch/shows?q=girls` -> **HTTP 200**, `application/json`, a full show object (`id:139, name:"Girls"`). No auth header, no key parameter.
- **TMDB refuses without a key in a specific, machine-readable shape.** `GET https://api.themoviedb.org/3/movie/550` with no key -> **HTTP 401**, `application/json`, body `{"status_code":7,"status_message":"Invalid API key: You must be granted a valid key.","success":false}`. The refusal is the TMDB-internal `status_code: 7` with `success:false`, distinct from the transport 401 — an agent should key off the body's `status_code`, not only the HTTP status.

How observed: 2026-09-30, curl. TVmaze `singlesearch/shows?q=girls` -> 200 (id 139, "Girls"). TMDB `/3/movie/550` with no api_key -> 401 body `{"status_code":7,...,"success":false}`.
