# MusicBrainz ws/2: contact User-Agent required, default is XML, `inc=` is validated

Observed live against `https://musicbrainz.org/ws/2/`.

- **A contact User-Agent is mandatory.** A request with an empty User-Agent returns **HTTP 403** (`content-type: application/json`): `{"error": "Your requests are being throttled by MusicBrainz because the application you are using has not identified itself. Please update your application, and see http://musicbrainz.org/doc/XML_Web_Service/Rate_Limiting for more information."}`. The same request with a descriptive UA carrying a contact URL (e.g. `AppName/1.0 ( https://example.org )`) returns **HTTP 200**. The observed code is **403**, not the 503 sometimes assumed.
- **Default format is XML.** With no `fmt` parameter the artist endpoint returns `content-type: application/xml; charset=utf-8` (`<metadata xmlns="http://musicbrainz.org/ns/mmd-2.0#">...`). Pass `fmt=json` for JSON.
- **`inc=` subqueries are validated.** `inc=release-groups` adds a `release-groups` array (25 entries for the sample artist). An unknown value `inc=bogusvalue` returns **HTTP 400**: `{"error":"bogusvalue is not a valid inc parameter for the artist resource.","help":"For usage, please see: https://musicbrainz.org/development/mmd"}`.
- Rate limit is documented at ~1 req/s per IP averaged. A short burst of 8 back-to-back requests all returned 200 here, so the 503 throttle was not triggered and no throttle behaviour is asserted.

How observed: 2026-09-30, curl to `https://musicbrainz.org/ws/2/artist/5b11f4ce-a62d-471e-81fc-a69a8278c7da` — `-A ""` -> 403; `-A "<UA with contact>" ?fmt=json` -> 200 JSON; `?fmt=json&inc=release-groups` -> 200 with release-groups; `?fmt=json&inc=bogusvalue` -> 400; no `fmt` -> application/xml.
